The mortgage burning ceremony climaxed a three-day celebration over the Labor Day holiday period. Actu al burning of the mortgage was performed by Gillis Royer of Prince Rupert and John Anderson of Ketchikan made a speech appropriate to the occasion. Smith, former president of the First National Bank of Eugene, Oregon, and W. M. Kittredge, retired rancher of Klamath Falls, Oregon, are now at Tlell, Queen Charlotte Llands. They drove north, calling at Bablne Lake enroute, and letft here for the islands by plane. They expect to spend a week or 10 days at Tlell. The waterfront was busy when four steamers Prince Albert, Prince John, Camosun ana Princess Mary were tied up at the Grand Trunk dock. Hot, dry weather throughout the district created a forest fire menace which had cost the government $50,000 in fire fighting. However, the coast region, which experienced a small amount of rain, was in lesc critical condition than the Interior. Two hundred and thlrtv forest fires had broken out in the district during the season. Ole Sather, a fisherman from the schooner Nornen, died in hospital after he had bfen brought in lrom sea In a critical condition from heart trouble. He was a well known member of the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union. Prince Rupert was due to get $3,350 as its share of British Columbia's motor taxes. The money was granted on the basis of municipal population. Prince Rupert's population was 6,393.
