It had been thought that the job of makin changes in the Corsair would have been soon enough to visit Alaska and elsewhere in the north, during the summer, but there was a delay. "Life" Magazine prints a picture of Nick Bez, widely known Pacific fisheries and cannery operator, styling him "one of the leaders of northwestern industry." He is from Yugoslavia and is aged 53. He has been in the fish business since he was 14. The caption says he owns large canneries in Oregon and Alaska and controls a feeder air line in Oregon and Washington and is a friend of President Truman. The value of the catch to Canadian fisherman during the first seven months of 1947 amounted to $247,000,000, a drop of $56,000,000 from the returns of the same period of 1956. The decline was largely on the Atlantic coast, where returns from the cod and lobseter catches have been greatly lowered as a result of reduced catch and lower prices. Facing Big Republic Shedding Isolationism With Difficulty Under Demands of World Leadership By FORBES RHUDE Canadian Press Business Editor The United States today is the great advocate of freer world trade yet she is also the great example of a country which put a barrier around herself, and which still is primarily a seller to other countries rather than a buyer herself. She faces a major decision, not in theory, but in practice. Time was before two world wars when Britain was the trading and financial heart of the world. She had one natural resource, coal. Outside of that she imported raw materials from the rest of the world and 1 J A. I 1- i. f She lent money with a wld hand. She lost a lot of it in a direct sense, but in an Indirect sense it came back. Her ships rode the seas high, wide and handsome, carrying cargoes both wars. She Is fighting her way back, but in the meantime leadership in trade and finance has crossed the ocean. It has crossed to i country so large and rich that I't had been largely scX-sus-talnlng and whose fate had not depended upon drawing in wealth from the seven seas. Even today there are those in the United States who say that foreign trade is unimport ant to her, though what Is considered Informed opinion holds that foreign trade is what sppks American prosperity, the kicker that keeps the domestic machinery turning when it might otherwise slow down from intertia. HARD DECISION' IS COMING UP For while the United States was primarily occupied in open ing up and exploiting her own half-continent, her very wealth brouaht her foreism trad with- 1 uut great exeruon, inougn ner destlnv dld not dpnpnr4 nn ,t ... t i 1 iNUW 5ne nag worm leanprsnin economically and politically, opposed by Russia. Britons tell her that she must do as Britain did, spend her money to the hilt to enable otner countries to buy. It is a hard decision for the traditionally self-contained republic. Her political Isolationism dies hard and only under force of circumstances. The bone-bare farts nf tho loct ,. i hard with many pf her citizens who cry that they are "suckers." She poured money into the First World War and accumu-n Mated war debts which trprp tin- paid. Then she lent monnv for a recovery and again was unpaid. I j the 75 barges carrying merchandise i between here and Blrmlng ', ham on the Grand Union Canal I spend less time at school than most British children have for their holidays. A school has been built on a barge to meet the need.? of these 87 children but Its 28 seats are rarely all occupied. Attendance fluctuates frome one to 15. Children accompany parents cn their trips, which may last from three to four weeks. Some 13-year-old boys who attend are still learning to spell words like cat and dog, raid Eva Shclton, who teaches in the school. 20 HAPPY FAMILIES LONDON At least 20 fanv Hies in Britain will be warrn, this winter.
