Sunday School Lets Speak Bluntly WHATEVER ELSE may be said about the Soviet Union at least its manners are distinctive, says Montreal Star. What is to be made of a government which sends its foreign minister abroad to discuss a plan for European self-help, aided by American capital, and at the same times launches a violent propaganda attack upon the country sponsoring the plan? Up to now there has been a tendency to excuse this kind of performance. We feel we must "get along with the Russians," and that it is important to maintain co-operation. But it is about time that the Russians gave " some heed to getting along with ' us. We have been saying that we must try and understand the Russians, whose ways are different from our ways. How about the Russians trying to understand us for a change? We have said that part of the trouble is that the Russians are suspicious of us, and we must allay their fears. It is perhaps time we said out loud that we are highly suspicious of the Russians, who might make an effort to prove to us that our suspicions are wrong. ; General Marshall was right to strike out as he did. He declared that the Soviet pronaganda was "a malicious distortion of the truth." This plain speaking, distant though it may be from the normal amenities of diplomatic procedure, was amply justified. In dealing with a boor, it is necessary to be just as blunt as that. PRINCE RUPERT ! PROCKTER, St. Andrew's Cathedral) It is not so long ago that I was looking at a picture of the Garden of Eden that had been drawn by a Japanese and Adam and Eve both looked as if they were of the Japanese race. There was also a picture of the birth of Our Saviour in which He and the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph were all Japanese. There is a beautiful drama which was played in the prin-' Pharaoh and a hls nost clpal English speaking cities of;y somenoWi tnough my skin b the world twenty ago' years wn,te and j haye neyer beena called "Green Pastures" in which ! the record of Creation, the Fall, the Deluge; the Exodus and right along to the Redemption is all enacted as seen in the mind's eye of a negro child in the state of Louisiana. E. MORTIMER You see, the Bible stories are ever so much truer than mere factual statements since they go right down to the root of the matter. Those words speak to the soul of man, to each in his own tongue and, according to his own circumstances. Incidental things such as color of skin and race are hardly noticed. The Bible is concerned with the things that are always true, not the things concerning which the opinions, of men change from day to day the Nature of God and the Nature of Man. That Is why the Bible, though some of it was written in the form we now have it as much as thirty-five hundred years -ago; some of it derived from documents and traditions much older than that, even; and the most' recent words there were written eighteen hundred years ago: yet that Book is still the most modern book. Maybe we have today more information about certain of the mechanical aspects of our environment. At one time they thought the world was flat and now they think it is spherical except for a few rebels who hold that its true structure is that of a revolving disci Bu?these are not the vital things. No fair-minded person goes to the Bible in order to mate a mathematical calculation, a a scientific lecture or an aeroplane. Trouble can result , ,earned m nUglha and from some ignorant soui picmng up the Bible for the first time and opening it at random and coming to some conclusion that can be both extravagant and false. We believe that the Biblt should be open and available to all in their own language, but also believe that It Is not unreasonable to call upon people to hear sermons. Any and every sermon must expound the Bible. A preacher who uses the pllPlt to speaK of best sellers or political mat ters is in the same category as a railway ticket, agent who offers magazines instead of tickets from his window. I am convinced that one of the reasons for the defection from church attendance on the part of many people has been the blythe way in which thousands of those who should have known better have ignored the Word of God and have "given an address" instead of preaching a sermon.
