WRATHALL'S Photo Finishing Box 478 Prince Rupert, B.C. Prince Rupert's boatbuilding and repair industry, which usually hits its peak period of activity during the late fall, winter and early spring, is in a seasonal peak at present. Particularly is this so at the dry dock and McLean's boat yard at Seal Cove. The latter plant is as busy as at any time in its 25-year history on repair work. Dry dock , ; workers are getting more over-! pioneer boat builder is of 26 by time than at any time during i 65-foot dimensions and will take the war. Generally, however, such work has slacked off in smaller yards, mainly because the fleet Is busy on the various fishing grounds and the fishermen are saving everything except the most necs-sary Jobs until the fishing harvest is over. Equipped with a marine railway on which they can haul up a boat, make repairs then return it to the sea on one tidal change, McLean's are getting a continual flow of these repair Jobs and, in addition, have enough alteration work to keep their ten-man crew working overtime. The marine railway, built by the late Norman M. McLean a vessel up to 90 feet in length. The yard is now operated by Wilfrid and William McLean, sons of the founder. At present, rocs work for a second marine railway, larger than the present one, Is unde way. When the new one is com pleted, it will be of 40 by 100 feet dimensions and have a capacity of a 125 -foot boat. It Is to be situated immediately along side the present covered boat shop. Among jobs being done at Mc Lean's are rebuilding of the upper work" on Art Oswald's boat Westoe, the former Anglican mission boat Northern Cross which was later used as a work boat at Georgetown Sawmills, The 50-foot Westoe Is being converted into a troller-packer. The hull on this boat was rebuilt several years ago and is in good shape. The engine also is being moved forward. The B.C. Packers boat Otter Bay, a big packer, went on the marine railway .Thursday for minor hull and propeller repairs and was taken 'off last night. Two former American army landing barges, of handy size, are being equipped with superstructure for their owners by McLeans. Both these barges were shipped in recently from the south. One, nearing completion, is for the Northern B.C. Power Co. for use on the Ecstall River where its shallow draft will be valuable, and the second, on which work has not yet begun, is for Little.Hauglandand Kerr Lumber Company at Ter race ,for use on Kitsumkalum Lake. Both barges are powered with 225 h.p. Gray dlesel cn gines. At the dry dock, things are "really busy" according to Superintendent Robert Cameron. A dozen boats are on the pontoons and more are expected. Most of the work Is on engine repairs, most of them larger fishing company boats. The' North Pacific Packing Company's boat Zumlni III Is In for a major engine job, having broken a crank shaft, while among other boats are the West Jack, Oceanic Point, Western Rover, Dovre B, and Carlisle Point. The halibutter Kodlak is due here today under tow from Westward, where she lost her propellor while on the Area Three grounds.
