For Wilfred Moran Rutherford, city licence Inspector, was large ly responsible for introducing the game to Moose Jaw ths city's first course was built- on the prairie In front of his home. The holes were automobile pistons stuck In the ground, he had one golf club, and the flags were made by his wife from old underwear. He took up the game by accident. While emDloyed as bailiff under Sheriff Norman Gentles In 1920 he visited Gentles' summer cottage and was invited to a round of golf. He really wanted to go swimming, but decided to go along for a game. He says he was "so mad" when he couldn't hit the. ball In the first 25 strokes that the first thing he did when he got home was to lay out a golf course. Neighbors Joined his front- yard golf club and each of them contributed a different "stick." Eventually they :iaa a complete set of clubs and the game spread like wild-fire. Later the group purchased some land north of the city and laid "out a proper course now the Lynbrook Oolf Club. Now 55, he hasn't played eolf for eleht years because of other sporting interests. He Is past nresident of the Moose Jar branch of the Saskatchewan Fish and Game League, the Moose Jaw Gun Club and the Isaak Walton Fishing Club and played lacrosse, hockey and football for Moose Jaw teams. He became-city licence Insoec-tor in 1929 and part of his work consists of collecting coins from the city's 217 parkins meters.
