I The Flower Show THOSE ENTHUSIASTIC people of the Prince I .Rupert Horticultural Society who .were responsible for the staging and arrangement of ithe Flower Show in the gymnasium at theiGiviciCentre in connection with the annual carnival are to tbe , highly commended. It .was a .work of ingenuity:and art It was also a striking exposition of the accomplishments of the local horticulturists whose number is legion and whose enthusiasm is unremitting. This was not a particularly good seasqn .and there was a nasty week-end storm which .dealt. a blov to a lot of the flowers but one would never know ,it from the excellence of the display at the flower t show. The fruits of the toil of good citizens who take a pride in their homes and a ceaseless interest in tjie good earth and its fecundity vere.most;gratify-ing exhibited. -Ibis a happy thing thatJirince Rupert again has many:fine gardens for which it was noted for many yeare But which became somewhat emaciated dur-.irigjthe war when the most of the men .were .either aWAVjar preoccupied to weariness with the war jobs. These are the days when men and women and girls and boys, home from the shops, the desks and "the offices, out of the kitchens and.out of school, reap the reward and satisfaction of the spring evenings they spent in digging and planting, the summer in weedirjg.and watering. Mealtimes now are a special treat .with the prodjict of the vegetable gardens. Rooms are laden with cut flowers and gar-. ;. dens are a showy delight. Prince Rupert has a wealth of fine gardens, and the vegetables, flowers .and shrubs are a tribute ;to ; the city's horticulturalists. Good citizens .have added beauty to already beautiful Prince iRiipert. -SKEEN A HIGHWAY r- THE SKEBNA:HIGHW;AY was opened only.three I .years ago. WILSON, First United Church) 'iMalntainthe Spiritual Glow." -Romans 12:17. .Moffatt. Did you ever open vour stove expecting to see a glowing. fire and find instead a bed of. cold grey ash A similar but more disappointing discovery is that ot a Christian life that has lost its fire. .St. Paul knew, what ,a warm ,and glowing thing the Christian life could be and he.also knew that it was possible for the warm fire of faith .to die out Dr. Moffat's translation of Romans 12:11 make the apostle's thought clear with the words: "'Maintain the spiritual clow." Two things are necessary to a vital spiritual life. Onthe on? hand the Christian nust find nourishment for the life that is within him ..and on the. other be must be active in the expression ' and application of his faith. Let us consider first, the nourishment oJ the inner life. Today few people are .Ignorant of thp relation of diet to bodily health. It is strange that sofew, ,e,ven among avowedly Christian folk, are aware of the Importance of fplriual nourishment , to .(he inner lilfe. Many interesting parallel? between the two fields sug gest themselves but the condition that we are now concerned with is a kind of epidemic splr-' itral anaemia.'Thls disease i. worse in .eora years than in others and I su.?pe!t th'at it is' worse in summer than In win-Jpr. -As a. result of it the sufferer loses his ability to cope with quite ordinary problems. He feels tired and k Jn constant need of hero from.other.ViOddly.enoush, like its, physical, counterpart, the disease is often present where you would least suspect it. A close diagnosis,.would reveal that some lives that seem to be strong are .actually inwardly wasted and .wjtnout the vital Slow of the Spirit. ,If this Is j-pur spiritual condition I would like to suggest two roads that.jead to health. First, what ideas have you been entertaining? What have you been reading? vWbat pictures have you seen? :Have ;they been the .kind that help, you believe that life is .wprtbwhile and that its .richest I meaning As to.be foun jp obedi-,ence tP-Gpd's purpose? ,Perhans ' j your condition is so run down I tha t you.canpDt itand the heavy ' 5 cynicism ttf iruch popular jJ thougbt. You may find some of it puzzling but. To m.uch the better, you will get something more out of it the pext Hmeyou read It. The most vital life that the world has ever seen has ;found nourishment in its pages. It will help you to "maintain file spiritual elow" The second thing that I want to say about maintaining the vitality of the inner life is about prayer. The Christian life is friendship with CTirlst. What you SAILS HATCH COVERS self. Christ asks these tilings of us. He is a poor friend who refuses to talk with or listen to his companion. Such lukewarm-ness is unthinkable in human friendship .and it .Is even more unwprthy of the divine friendship of faith. If you want tokeep your plrituaUlfe fresh and vl-orogus do not neglect the privilege of prayer. But, just as there a more to physiral health than fresh air apd good food, so there is more to the health of the spirit than the nourishment of the inner life. A Christian needs exercise. He, must be active in expressing the faith that is In him. He can not always be receiving, he must i be ;hlng too. The pond that ha j no cutlet becomes stagnant andi unhealthy while the lake withj both inlet and outlet stays clear and invigorating. It is the same with the life of the spirit. Every selfless good deed you do brings health to your soul. He"bo loses his lire shall find It. He who Josei his life in the comradeship pf faith and in the service of others expect from a friend is comrade- finds life to the full. He main ship and a chance to be your- tains the spiritual glow.
