(AP) Comedian Michael Sachs is on the road again playing before audiences he can't see (because he is totally blind. The feel of the boards and audience applause are a tonic to the SI -year-old comic, a veteran of 42 years in the theatre. He lost his sight completely two years ago. Sachs lost the sight of one eye as a five-year-old. He was playing a Russian prince being spirited away from revolution-' aries. A blank cartridge was fired close to his race and powder burns blinded his left eye. Two years ago, a blood clot on the retina robbed him of his other eye. "It was like a curtain going down," he recalls. "I was having breakfast with Dick Zeisler, manager of the Grand Theatre in St. Louis, when It happened. There wasn't any warning. Suddenly. I was blind." All treatments have failed to restore his sisht. .He gets around now with the aid of his "seeing eye lady," as he calls his teammate, Alice Kennedy. Sachs thought his theatrical career was ended when "the cur tain went down." Six months later, he ran into Al Somerby. Boston theatre owner. "The first thing he said was 'You open week after next,'" Sachs recalls. "I didn't know if I could make it; I thought I might get lost on the stage." But Sahchs opened In two v.feks in Boston. "SEEING EVE LADY" HIS GREAT HELP Miss Kennedy wa& to lead him onto the stage, "but when I heard my entrance music" Hail. Hail, the Gans's All Here," Sachs' music for two dec ades "I said, 'Never mind, dar ling, never mind go ahead." Ever since, -with the aid of Miss Kennedy, Sachs has been at home on the .stages he has played for more than 40 year3. "There's a feeling I can't ox-plain it tout you can feel thins 'I can hear the audience when ! I'm out there. And I know every beard and every nail on all those j stages." ! Sachs plays vaudeville tines that were old years aro. He is a "mugger." It isn't subtle, out it's funny. Many of the customers nowadays don't even know he Is blind. An ophalmologlst In one audience came to Sachs' dressing-room after the show to examine him. SNOW LOWER ON RUPERT MOUNTS Snow on the mountain tnns around Prince Rupert has evidently come to stay.
