Cohn, in The Reader's Digest for November. The casualties of American marriages are higher than those of our wars; two marriages in five now end in divorce and the trend is still upward. Marriage has been made almost meaningless by many who marry with the reservation that they wiU get rid of it if they don't like it. Cohn's article, condenser, from The Atlantic Monthly, examines American attitudes which, he believes, are largely responsible for the high di vorce rate. We teach our young that to be married is to be automatically happy, but we reject the "austere truth" that every blessing, has its price. Marriage is looked upon either as a relationship to"l)c&broken. at will-or as a finality. In the first case'Ave do not take it seriously. In the second we ske it falsely, for marriage is not a finality, Cohn contends, but a beginning. "Girls are brought up t'ojlook forward to marrying; then they may relax. Men marry to 'settle down.' But if marriage is to thrive it must be constantly renewed." JtTHolding that the emotional and intellectual adolescence" of Americans helps to destroy marriage,,. Cohn states that the United States is the only country where the husband is not and does not wa'nt to be a man, but a boy. "He wants to be mothered, not wived. Perhaps that is why he so ofteii calls his wife 'Mama," his daughter 'Sister,' and his son 'Brother.' ... In the first year his wife finds it pleasant to mother her boyish husband. But when children come she can better discharge her maternal impulses through them. Then babying her husband becomes tiresome and she yearns t live with a man." . A NOTABLE GAIN OFFICIAL AUDIT conducted this week at AN the Daily News office by the Audit Bureau of Circulations showed that the paid circulation of this newspaper has gained more than ten percent 'during the past six months to .reach the high-" csUroaric ever reached by any newspaper or other , publication in the history of Prince Rupert, the'iiK f Inter boom years of the war not excepted. Of course, it is satisfactory for us to be able to offer-to the city arid district through this substan- tial circulation the most effective advertising - modium the city has ever had, a newspaper which the people pay to read, and thereby esteem the more. ItHs; equally satisfactory, to, observe the implication of a steadily growing population as indicated ' by this phenomenal growth in local newspaper pat- ronage. Just before the war. the naid circulation of the Daily News was about 1800. Today it is over 2800 a very significant gain of which we are both proud and gratified. 1?RINCE RUPF.RT ... YEARS AGO , (October 26, 1912) It was announced at a meeting cMhe Overseas Club, held In the office of F. A. Ellis, that a provincial council was to be estab-lishedin British Columbia with A. 'Stcweil as Prince Rupert delegate. 'The following new members were enrolled In the local club: H. A. Phipott, A. G, A. Vid-lr, If, J. Goodwin, R. L. Heath-' cote, and A. D. Golden. The Prince Rupert, Capt. Barney Johnson, arrived from, the south on her last week-end trip of ,the season. The steamer had a good record in 1912, making 25 trips 'with total lateness of but four hours. Mr. and Mrs. P. R. C. Brown returned to the city on the Prince Rupert. This helps a little. Yet strangers are frequently confused. SAUCER, SAUCER,, WHO, HAD, THEM? LONDON TO Flyrne saucers have nothing on the magic cups at the Lancaster cricket field. They "came from nowhere" and even multiplied I It appears that 14 teacups disappeared from the tea stall on the first day of the challenge cup cricket matches at Lancaster, Next day 50 cups i were lost. A member of the com mittee was delegated to get them back and he cruised around the stands telling folks that "If I don't get the cups back the gates will be locked until I do." Somewhere, prob ably but of' coat pockets and various other hiding places, the missing cups plus 10 more- appeared like magic.
