Elderly couples, arm-in-arm, peer with scarce concealed awe i at the towering walls and lofty ceilings, stripped now of their rich mosaics and panelings and their massive, elaborate chan- jemers. it is a nanguver , oi ; awe lingering from former days or awe at the depths of their fuehrer's fall? If you ask-them,,, they shrug their shoulders and murmer. "terrible, terrible," and shuffle on. A gang of laborers still is working in the chancellery, removing what little is left of the precious marbles, 'metals and other building materials con- sidered to be or use for recon- struction elsewhere. When their' task is done, the whole build-; ing is scheduled for demolition.', .. Box 721 Waterfront Whiffs Briffps Prince Rupert-Alaska Freight Service Discontinued Bobolink Is Complete Loss The dream of making embarkation port servicing, southeastern Alaska shared by many Alaskans as well as local people apparently has folded. The conception, which is as old as Prince Rupert itself, received real impetus last June when Briggs Steamship Corporation put the motor vessel , Southeastern I into service. An announcement made Friday in Ketchikan states that the Southeastern is being withdrawn and probably will be sold. Phillip Briggs, president of the company said that the South-eastern's Prince Rupert-Ketchi- kan-Juneau service is being withdrawn "Indefinitely because iof insufficient tonnage, lurk nf ocal ,nterest and exhorbltant operating costs." Lack of "local Interest" presumably means failure of Alas- ka business people to support . iouul" .u- the Briggs proposal to have commodities shipped in bond from St. Paul to Prince Rupert and transshipped to Alaska on the Southeastern. Obviously the key to the success of the opera , tion was sustained which . , . .. cargo, ' . was lacking throughout the i brief career of the Southeastern. ineoreucany. the plan was sound and economically advantageous to Alaska. By shipping commodities to Prince Rupert by rail with a short boat haul to Alaska, freight costs undoubtedly would have been cheaper than they were routed via Seattle. However, the plan required a concerted move by Alaska busl ness men to purchase in quantity in the mid-west, which in many cases would have involved the creation of new business contacts. The idea, apparently Hitler's special bath, all have been removed. , vereueverywnereover w! !US'.ar m"ntf' o biwik . i sheets L1MeP?T h;adedlthe north side of the harbor nn?IPf " vj various virtue fnnmo ! It is a sorry little balcony, from which' today the eye roves over the1 Wilhelmplatz, where workmen i are breaking up and removing some of the wreckage of the Third Reich. But, in giant letters across the mass of Russian soldiers' names written at the entrance to the broad reception hall where Hitler received foreign diplomats, someone has scrawled: "Es lebe der fuehrer! ein Reich ein Reich eln (fuehrer isieg heill" ("Long live the fuehrer; one Reich one fuehrer! The sailings of the ss Prince Rupert from Vancouver on Mondays. November 17, November 24, and December 1, will be cancelled to enable the vessel to undergo annual inspection. She will resume her regular service again from Vancouver on Monday, December 8, According to recent reports from Alaska, as well as In Washington, the sea otter, once almost extinct and still amongst the rarest of fur bearing animals are on the way back. They are "somewhere" In the Aleutians, and If protected need never again face extermination. The stories are confirmed by coast and geodetic survey parties. One officer declares he has counted as many as 100 in a single herd. However, unless there Is great vigllence and rigid protection enforcement there Is liable, some time, to be poaching. Of all the north j coast fur bearing creatures, the j sea otter rank, among the most j beautiful, useful and valuable.!
