Those Highway Lies TWO ELDERLY WIDOWS from Texas, grand- I mothers, too, if yon please, have driven qlj the ; wqy intp Prince liupert and called at the Daily ; News., office yesterday to express their pleasure I'at having come, in spite of all the discouragement ;:that was put in their way even by Canadian of-fjcjals who ought to know better. They also want-; ed to voice their resentment at the kind of advice ; they received, even as close as Edmonton, on road 'conditions. "We are glad to be here. and to have travelled over such a delightful road that we were ' told did not exist," they said. ' It was rather amazing, we must agree with the . two ladies, to have been told by no less than of-' ficials of the Alaska Highway Traffic Control Board 'at Edmonton that there 'was no road at all iijto Prince Rupert and only a primitive trail to Prince George. Fortunately, they had heard that There was a road and decided to come on, notwith-' sending the official 'Information they were-given. It was either "politics" or "ignorance," the ladies felt, that caused such information to be given. "Whichever it was, it was bad, This is the. sort of propaganda Prince Rupert " must find some way of fighting off. ; Meantime, we are justified in feeling righteous- ly indignant that people who certainly should know . better ejther dq nqt know or refuse to telj the truth. TIME TO WAKE UP THE new cjty engieer, Mr. Howe, has not been drawing his punches in suggesting before local bodies-rrfirst the Public Relations Council and then the Gyro Club that the people of Prince . Rupert should come out of their insularity and lethargy and start becoming a little more active In , community service instead of continuing to grub around exclusively with their own little affairs. ; Mr. Howe, apparently, is not worrying very much-about whether or not such comment proves popu-' lar. People whom the cap fits, and there are no doubt a. lot of us, will not like such talk very much i: but people are. often influenced by what they do ! not like and tend to act accordingly, even if they ! do not admit it. Some acjvjce like Mr. Howe has ; been giving &nd we have indulged in it once in , .a. while ourselves needs ; saying, " As the engineer ; says, we have been suffering from an inferiority complex. We know that, as a community, there has been a lot of lacking both in spirit and action. The ' trouble is we have not got together unitedly enough to do something about it. We have Jacked leadership and have also lacked a spirit of iiir dividual responsibility. Prince Rupert is getting bigger and more important. We are getting to a state where, if we do not do something about improving the pjace our-i selves, somebody is going to. come In and do it for ; us and we will be shoved intq the background. We have been too smug and self-satisfied, content to ; grub along in qur rut, in fact seeming not to want , very much to come out of it. 1 CURBING BRITISH PRESS r REAT BRITAIN is going back to wpr size pews-;vj papers, and ieat is indication of the newspapers, and great is. indignation of the news-hot as well. The Attlee Government, in fact, could hardly have stirred up a bigger hornet's nest. '.With one voice, the press, denounce the alleged economy as either stupid or sinister. There is gloom in Fleet Street. Typewriters and writers are -uneasy as managements talk of reduced outlays. Papers are down to four pages which makes the situation next thing to impossible. Jt is doubly unfortunate because staffs had . been steadily bujlt up for post-war newspaper exr pansiqn. The Attlee government order became ef-. fective. July 21. By the reduction of newsprint and pulp, the f government expects to, gaye $15,000,000 annually -. but this is exceedingly, small compared with Britain s tQtaJ adverse trading Nance, What ma,k.es the press particularly hostile is . that the papers; appear to be the only real sufferers ' from the so-called economies. Are the papers to ' tolerate q cut of anything up to forty percent in newsprint supplies from Canada and the United States for the sake qf an economy of perhaps one five hundredth in Britain's visible adverse trade balance"? k This, it is held, does, not make sense. Leading papers like the Times and Manchester Guardian . fjnd they ca.nn.Pt altogether absolve the government from the Ulterjpr motive of taking this chance : of exerting- ppm.e curb pn the press. . ?: This is a very serious' charge. .ACLAJ5SIFIR0 AD JN TJfE PAILY WS WfLI, BRING RESULTS LETTERBOX MRfJ. 1NGALLS SEES THINGS Editor, Daily News. Familiar to most of us are the stories of the strange happenings in the land of the midnight sun . But when a strange thing happens In Prince Rupert It might well be phenomenal. However, In my modesty, I'll simply say that "I've been seeing things." Specifically, In this morning's light of the sun (July ?3, daylight) at ten o'clock as I i looked into the out-of-doors. For fully half an hour I watched with leisurely intent flying objects. They weren't flying saucers. And they were quite too small to be individual butterdishes. But the objects I saw were spherical and gelatinous In appearance. I saw literally dozens of globules a quarter of an jnch In diameter uniformly spaced insx or eight Inch lengths qf ribbon-likejilm; several globules in each length. As they were wafted along through the air like snowflakes with a distinct downward trend, thev: were furled Into yarlous shapes. ' Some of the globules, seeminelv exuberant in their' Inderiendence were wafted along singly. Others, in groups similar to a cluster of soap-bubbles floated alone to gether. They were of the small er variety of globules a six teenth of an inch In diameter- each. But those In the ritibon-like lengths were not only double in size but many of them had a black dot In Its centre. Amused at the seeminelv Dhn. omenal sight that I was witness- ing!:aml wondering If my eyes could possibly be playing me false I called upon the only other member of our household present to verify my belief. After severa) rnoments cf interested alertness, she described the ob jects identically to my Idea of same. Being unable to give any scien tific name to the above phen omenon, I could only assume. humorously that either atomic energy has routed the planet Mars' population ... or we have with us a brand new Divine Cre ation: Flying Saucers the adults. BEAUTY AND DANGER A striking contrast in frozen majesty and treachery of the snowcapped wasteland over wjiich the "Operation White Tower" group of scientists travelled on their way to the summit of Mt. McKlnley, Alaska, is given in this view. In scaling the Alaskan, giant, the group endured the worst weather ever to assail North America's highest, coldest peak. Here, two members of the expedition cross a treacherous crevasse at the foot of Mt. McKlnley. These snowy death traps claimed the lives of two explorers in 1932 and swallowed one member of the Washburn party duripg a reconnaissance hike. AIR PASSENGERS.
