UpS'Oa DOWN- DOWN rf tTfr f ON ME RIGHT v 13 Vf') GEORGE HILL PASSES AWAY George Hill, one of Prince Rupert's pioneer business men. who had operated a shoe store and repair business In the city for the last thirty-five years, died in Prince Rupert General Hospital Tuesday night at the age of 69 after a lingering illness. He was a prominent Mason. Active in the business life of the community since coming here in 1913, he was a quiet man of many friends. He was a past master of Tyee'Lodge A.F. & A.M., and this year was district Deputy Grand Master of the order. He was also a member of the Rotary Club, which he Joined three ' years ago. Mr. Hill was born at Newport. Monmouthshire, Wales, on October 10, 1878, and recentlyhe commented that he had passed his "apprenticeship" period In the shoe making and retailing business after being active in it for 50 years. In his early youth, he shipped aboard a vessel from Wales and sailed around the world before returning to learn the shoe busi ness. I He was married in Newport i before coming to Canada first, in 1909. At that time he worked at Saskatoon, Lethbridge and Nelson but returned to Wales late in .1911. He came back to Canada in 1913 with his famllv. fettling in Prince RuDert. i Mr. Hill started his first busi ness on Ihe site of what is now Superior store, later moving to a building near the present John Bulger Jewelry store. At on&; time he was a partner In the Family Shoe Store. He left the i partnership, however, and re erjtered business alone at his ' I - present site on Third, Avenue, near Sixth Strettii(.ii'-uMi A kindly man o; even disposition. Mr. ID11 had many friends in the city and it was, said of him that he had never been known to say an unkind word of anyone. He is survived by his wife and six children, three sons,. Willis Henry (Duster), George, Jr., and Trevor H. all of Prince Rupert, and three daughters, Mrs. A. C. Kermey, of Olendale, California, Mrs. C. R. Taylor, of Vancouver, and Miss Phyllis Hill, of Prince Rupert. All are in the city at the present time.
