PHONE 200 Totem Pole Is Unusual A Visitor is Interested in Floral, Decoration (By M. E. Anderer) The lady, evidently a visitor, came into the Civic Centre and apparently had a definite objective In mind. "Can I be of any help?" I csked. "Well, thank yoa very much. perhaps you can," sne replied, vi noticed that on of the totem poles being repaired beside your museum had a floral design on it. Now all the other totems I have seen have had carvings of animals on them. This is the first one I have ever seen with a floral design; and I wanted to get some explanation or further details about it." The visitor was "right. It Is art unusual totem, unusual for two reasons at least. First of all it has a floral design gracefully carved on It. Secondly. It was brought from Queen Charlotte Islands. Now the floral design is the fireweed. Tills is the crest of the Upper Skeena River Indians Then the pole was brought from the Oueen Char lotte Islands, and no tribe on the Queen Charlotte Islands has the fireweed crest. Hew did the pole get from the Upper Skeena j ,to the Queen Charlotte Islands? Perhaps a Halda chicftiln married one of the Upper Skeena tribe . But Indian tribes do not Intermarry. The totem pole Is interesting too because when it was discov ered on Queen Charlotte Islands it had been there a long time-so long that not only was it overgrown with moss but even trees were growing over It. It had to b sawn in two before it could be moved. Liter it was SDliced. The Uoual characteristic of totem poles are well exemplified in the museum poles. The mythical Thundeibi;-d surmounts the pole. The beak; resembling that of a raven or eagle, had to be repaired. The representation of, a face, possibly the carver of the tctcm, can be seen. On one there are four broad bands. These may Indicate -that the carver was the fourth chief. There Is a she .grizzly bear holcj-ing her young. As Is often the case semt minor part of an animal is. given unusual jromlnence. A conventional representation of a tongue, or claws or eyes is exaggerated. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to identify some of .the carvings and markings. The carver never hesitated to give free play to his TENDERS WANTED TENDERS INVITED for 1000 feet of tunneling in Omineca Gold Quartz mine, ten miles from Terrace. The typical native lore of symmetry is shown. Parts are enlarged or reduced so as to present a balanced result. The enquiry by this observant visitor should be a challenge tJ all citizens. Do we know what we have In our midst? Do we (appreciate them? The seven totem poles at Alder Park, those r.ear Fulton Street, on the C.N.R. Park and 'now these two being erected at the Museum, are worth while. They tell the history. In visual form, oJ Individuals. They tell it in an unusual way, a way characteristic of and peculiar to the west coast of British Colum bia. But to be able to read this ''history" requires some study.
