ON WAY SOUTH AFTER ALASKA HUNTING TRIP Power Yacht Salmora Was in Port Last Night With Los Angeles Owner Aborad The power yacht Salmora was Friday, August 8, 1921. The present is a good opportunity for Prince Rupert to get started in the grain export business. 'Victoria is making an effort to get started. The president of her chamber of commerce in a recent press announcement uses the same argument which would apply very well to Prince Rupert, he says: "During the next few months Victoria will share to a steadily increasing extent the business of transshipping freight from the Panama Canal route to the British Columbia mainland and Alberta. This is largely due to the new schedule of charges levied by the Vancouver Harbor Board in order to defray the enormous expenditures that have been made there. "Today Vancouver has a surcharge on all shipping going into that port of 10 cents a ton on tile tonnage of vessels, 30 cents a ton harbor dues on incoming freight, 00 cents wharfage, 05 cents handling charge, and on outgoing freight a duplication of all these charges, constituting a total cost for double transshipment in the port of Vancouver of $3.30 a ton. Advantage Of Free Port In Shipping. "In contrast to that situation Victoria is practically a free port, having no harbor dues and uo,tonnago charges. on vessels, continues Mr. Schwengers. Our only charge is wharfage at the rate of 50 cents a ton and handling charge 00 cents. "As an illustration of the sort of trade we may expect, 10,- 000 cases of liquor for Alberta vre handled at the Outer Docks last mouth. All outgoing freight destined for points east of Spence's Bridge carries the same. rate from Victoria as Vancouver. By utilizing the port Of Victoria instead of Vancouver, . Alberta saved on that one shipment $1 a ton, which in 'the aggre gate is an imposing figure. "If proper" steps are taken to bring lhe.se facts .to the at tention of the importers of Western Canada this port will be established as the dominant trans-shipping port for Panama Canal freight, which today is a tremendous factor. It js not necessary to draw on the imagination to sree- up the situation. The Fiirness Line has seen the .writing mi the wall and is now planning to make Victoria jU port of call instead of Vancouver." ... . , - ... . .
