POISON WOLVES IN FAR NORTH Many Destroyed and Pelts Se- Secured During Past OTTAWA, Jan. 11. A fur ther campaign of extermination against the woke of Hie Barren lands has been decided upon by the North West Territories branch of the department of the interior. Last year a party of hunters, under H. Loranger, a vet eran or the Arctic were em ployed in poisoning the wolves in the country north east of tjio Great Slave bake, this operation proved entirely satisfactory, and it is to be repeated this yea on a larger scale. Mr. Loranger' s parly Irnxellcd hi their own schooner from Fort Smith to Ihe'Lockhnrt ricr country and once arrived built camps in the Tegion of the caribou migration, and set out poison for the wohes, which prey on the deer. The hunters took in only uuc quarter of an ounce uf poison but even with this small quantity. several hundred woles were killed off, while there was prac tically no damage to the fur bear ing animals. In order to investigate the methods employed by the hunt ers, Corporal Schutz, K.C.M.P., of Fort llesolulion, made a winter patrol into the Artillery lakes country, and found that the op. jervitioiis were being carried on in a manner satisfactory to the government. The department has received definite proof as lo (lie results achieved; and it is intended to prosecute this work until fuch time as the millions of cariUm.in the Itarren IaiuIs are safe from the attacks of the wolves which Up to the present time have every lynar killed off large numbers of Ihe deer.
