The long winter is facing us and it may be a dreary time -with nothiug to do but look forward lo spring. It also may be the most enjoyable and instructive time of the year when' the long winter evenings may -be utilized to .great benefit This is the time to plan the winter program. It is evident that activity is desirable and that it sboflld be some greater activity than simply attending social events. Some definite purpose might well be achieved without interfering with tbe work that is being carried on during the day lime. Learn Something Of Definite Character. This is a good time for the young meji or young women to learn something of a definite nature. Some will study music. Others will possibly perfect themselves in English or .make a study of French or some other langunage. Art work, mechanics:, radio or eleclriral studies all offer fields lor research ,or for developing the faculties. . So far there has been no announcement in regard to whether there will be a night school .conducted under the auspices of the school board. Even siiould this not be done there are correspondence courses, private tutors and much study jnay be carried on without any of these means. The library lends aid to thoe anxious to study and tbe services of the librarian are always open to them to help in the selection of books. Aimless Life Leads Nowhere. The aimless life leads nowhere. ' Second Language Helps A Lot. Learning a language olher .thanvourown is a valuable means of cultivating the intellect. It has been said that no person knows the English language until fie knows at least one other language. We learn very largely by comparison and no one quite appreciates the intricacies of English until he has learned how it translates into French, German, Spanish, or some other language. Make Our Homes More Beautiful. .Efforts to make the home more beautiful are always in order. Many homes are very bare and it is no wonder those who -live there prefer to spend most of the time away frouj it Tbe walls are bare and dirty, the curtains hang awry, the furniture broken or unpolished, the vtill paper lorn and everything indicating lack of interest in the surroundings. What a pleasant contrast it is lo find the people of the house anxious to bave everything neat aud tidy, the decorations in keeping with the surroundings and the place made homelike and attractive. It does jiot e,ost much except effort lo have everything neat and it is wonderful how w-e learn to improve ourx taste as soon as we begin to how an interest in making the most -we possibly can of the jHieans at our :Oommaud. .' . , ' - '"v If fixities Make For Determination. There is a visitor an the .city who says he takes most of his iPleasvire from his garden. He grows flowers when al home and particularly roses. In Prince Rupert gardening is not as easy ;as jn some part of the country but a garden here well repays the .efforts of the .gardener. It is necessary only to look at the results .obtained .at the government fluildiugs where the flowers compare quite favorably, with those raised in other parts of the country. This is the time to plau the garden or next year and to do the preliminary work. It is work well worth while and is of .value to the whole community, it is less selfish work thai) any other.
