One of the new books, a translation from the Russian, is "Beasts, Men and (Sods" by Dr. Ossendowski. It tells of the efforts made by the author n escape from Siberia when the Bolshevik movement spread to his district and of the lime he speit and the people he met in Mongolia, lie devotes several chapters to telling of (he mysteries of the' Buddhist religion or what is known as the Yellow branch of it. He spent much .time with the Lamas and with the living Buddha or as he is generally styled "The Living God." Also he heard from the Buddha and from Others the mystery of the Kingdom of Agharti and the King of the World. Possibly (here is no means by whih line could gel as good an idea of life of the people of Mongolia as. from this book and the narrative form helps lo add lo the interest. Popular Verdicts Often ArcWrong. Popular verdicts are closely allied to mob rule and are often wrong. Stories are passed around quietly aiid are -generally believed and denials are useless. That seems lo have happened in the case of the recent murder case at Vancouver. The affair was hushed up ami that gave.rjse to all sorts of suspicions. Tongues began to wag and the names of different people in prominent stations in life were dragged in and their reputations besmirched. Until Hie mystery is cleared up there will' be suspicion On those who are innocent. The difficulty with stories that go around in a matter of this kind is that it is so difficult lo deny them. To do so .would involve publication of the suspicion and of the denial together. The Vancouver nud provincial police say they have investigated nil the rumor.f and have-found themselves at n dead end. " The chief fault in regard to the whole business seems to have arisen from the laxity of'th'e' -'Point' firey police, who failed to make proper investigations at the lime of the tragedy. Babcock Appointment Is Best Possible. The appointment of J. P. Babcock on the halibut commis sion, which was announced exclusively in this paper yesterday, should be most satisfactory to those who wish to secure rea! scientific information in regard lo the habits of the fish nud the best means of coping with Hie situation. That Ihcv will be depleled before long goes without saying, unless something is done lo prevent il. The close season which has been established is the first step- in thai direction and any further action will liave to follow the report of the commission. Mr. Babcock is an authority on salmon but so far no one seems lo know very much aboiil halibut. It will be (he business of the commission to thoroughly investigate the habits and breeding grounds of the fish. All Preparing For Christmas Season. People are now all looking forwaru to Christmas and the "shop early" warning is just as -appropriate this vear as in the p'ast. . There is always a rush at the end and at that time the goods in the stores have been all picked over by the early buy ers and the best selections made. Every person wants to make some presents nl The festive season, u is just as easy to begin making the nurehases now as (o wait until the lime when everybody is haunting the, stores mm m-coiiiing irriinoie ai not nemg aide lo get proper service. Everybody needs it, most people want it. it Is everybody's friend. As a result, people arc asking themselves today : "Am I insurable?" "How can I tfet. sufficient life Insurance?" and the answer is found In the ever-increasing number of policies now being applied for. There is a foundation for this success: The general public Is rapidly coming to realize the solid basis upon which life insurance rests; that the business Is subject to a rigid system of Government Inspection: and that while Life Insurance is a form of organized sharing of each other's burdens, it is managed on a sound business basis.
