SHORT WAVES FOR WIRELESS Marconi Tolls About His Work With Leatest Beam Stations. Many inquiries liave been made liere in regard to the wireless beam stations which am being installed and of which Vanenuver Is to gel one. Signor .Marconi, before the Hoyal Society of Arts in London, recently gave an account of the experiments he had carried out with long distance short wave directional wireless telegraphy on the beam system. He remarked thai though short waves and reflectors were used in the earliest experiments in wireless transmission, the long-wave system made such rapid progress (hat research was diverted from short waves, and only re-cenlly has it heen discovered thai these waves, which alone can. in practice, be confined in beams to definite directions, are capable of results that are unobtainable ,wilh (he longer waves commonly employed for longdistance communication. Jle returned to the short waves about 1010, and has since made variant experiments with them. In parr licular. in April, May, and June, of last year he sailed in his yacht Elellra as far as the Cape Verde Islands, to investigate the conditions of I ransmission from Poldhu, where a short-wave installation had been tilled, and found (hat, contrary lo general belief, the day ranges for waves aboul 100 metres long are reli able and not inconsiderable; that the night ranges are much great er Ihan had been anticipated and that intervening masses of land do not present serious obstacles to the propagation of the waves. He also discovered that the slrenglh of fhe signals during the hours of daylight varies definitely and regularly in accordance willi the altitude of the sun above the horizon over the space or resion intervening be tween the transmitting and re ceiving stations. Half Round World. In the earlier part of this year short-wave signals from Poldhu were received at Sydney "every day perfectly well" from 5 p.m. to 0 p.m. ffireenwich lime) and also between (5.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. Id view of the position and TIMBER SALE X 6359. sealed Tenders will lie received by the MlnlsUtr or J.uniK it Victoria, not later than noon mi tlie J 1st nay or jiny, iw. for the purchase or Licence .i.jav, iu mi 17.000 Jarkpine Ties on an ara umimi-u iw.nt i u. mi x nnriii or caiiao an ca nons la way. between raunir ana ihio Lake, limine 4. Rarely is more than one ounce needed for the worst case. He sure to ask the druggist for the double strength Othine as this strength is sold under guarantee of money back if it fails lo remove freckles. Slenhouse, Ltd., 35 St. Fran- aois Xavier St.. Montreal. One. all itude of the sun, it would appear that the waves during the morning period travelJed west wards from F.ngland across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, along Ihr longest route lo Sydney (about 1 2,2 1 9 nautical miles). and during the evening period eastwards over Europe and Asia along the shortest route (about 9,38 1 miles). These resulla tempted Senator Marconi to try a wireless telephony lest lo Aus. Iralia, and on May 30 intelligible speech was transmitted for the llrst lime from England to Syd ney. The total power applied was about 28kw., I he wave was !2 metres in length, and no reflector was used. In Senalor Marconi's opinion il has now been proved that ade-i qualely designed reflectors, even if of comparatively moderate si.e will enormously increase (lie ef fective strength of the sigjjals. Moreover, the use of receiving reflectors will lie of (he greatest advantage to practical working, because, while magnifying the slrengfh of Iho received waves, I hey reduce all interference, whether caused by atmospheric electricity or by other stations, unless the direction from which Mm interference is coming happens io coincide exactly with thai of the corresponding stations. High Speed. Very high speeds of working appear to be possible only if very short waves are employed. And there is. no theoretical reason why, with a frequency of 3,000,- 000, the frequency of oscillation of a 100-metre wave, the speed should nol be 1 00 times greater than thai attainable with a fre iiueney of jo,(H)u, wincii represents the frequency of a wavn length of the order it is proposed to use for the Imperial stations Another advantage is that when desired, only stations situated within a certain reslricled anglo of sector of the beam are able to receive, and this condition brings aboul a comparative privacy or secrecy of communication unnb lainahle with any olher system of radio-communication. This might prove of the greatest im porlance in time of war, besides considerably increasing the num. her of stations il will be possible lo work, by reducing the possi bilities of mutual between 1beui. MOTOR TOURISTS ARE SENATORS ARE UNDER FIRE Victoria Paper Says They Will Have To Give Way If People Say So. The position of the Senate of Canada is under lire by a number of newspapers of Canada. The latest to take iwi arms against Ihe second chamber is the (oria Times, which says: Vic- Senalor Crowe, of Vancouver, seems conlemptuous of Premier King's announcement that steps will be taken lo curtail the veto power of the Senate over legislation passed by the House of Commons. p defiantly points out I Ii al any measure of Senate reform Ihe Government would seek lo have enacled would have to be concurred in by the Senate, which therefore would have to lie reckoned willi . Master of Situation. Ihe implication of this, of course, is that the Senate is mas ter of the situation and can af ford lo (real with scorn all pro posals for its reform no matter how strong or general might lie Ihe demand for it. Hon. Mr. Crowe is quite mis taken in his estimate of the situ alion. If the Canadian people in a general election on Ihe issue ueciareu lor entiie reiorm liy a large majority, as hey certainly would, the Senators would do some very serious thinking on the subject, the concurrence of Ihe Senale in an applicalion lo the Jtrjlisli Parliament for the necessary amendments lo the Canadian constitution probably would not lie required so Ion as such applicalion was adopted by Uie Jlouse of Commons at Ottawa on the authority of Uie Canadian people decisively given in an election. Special Prlvlleoe. Senalor Crowe says the Senate was established to protect minorities and check freak legislation. The record shows clearly enough that by minority the ma jority of the Senators mean spe cial privilege, and by freak leg islation measures, passed by the House of Commons, which privil eged interests do nol like. In their catalogue of freak legisla tion they include the pensions bill and the Canadian branch line bills which I hey killed for all practical purposes. There is one minority however, that the Senale does not protect and that is Ihe minority of Sen ators in its own body who want to see this reactionary relic of irresponsible government trans formed into a democratic institu tion desirous of carrying out Ihe wishes of the people who pay lo maintain it.
