GAME SEASON AND FORESTS Proposal In California to Change Open Dates for Hunters to Protect Timber SAN FHAN0ISCO, .Ian. I. I he increasing prevalence of disastrous forest fires during Ihe bis-game hunting season in California and other western stales has turned Ihe attention of rnnsrrvalionisls and sportsmen to considering the possibility of changing J he hunting seasons lo eliminate the fire hazards. Although tHe sportsmen's organizations challenge Ihe repealed assertions that hunters are responsible for many of our mountain fire, the fact remains that the most dangerous fire season, from Ihe point of damage to limber, is Ihe contemporaneous with Ihe big-game hunting seasons. In California the deer season covers the late summer and early fall a period when the forests are dry from a lack of summer rains and are potential tinder boxes for Ihe careless hunter's neglected camp fire or cigarelte. The proposal has been made that the deer season in California be changed lo a period following the first fall rains, preferably lafe November or early Decemlier. There sceiu to be no legitimate objection lo (his proposal, oilier than thai such a season might not be convenient for some hunters. Disastrous Season The past season has been a lisaslrous one to California forests. Fire have been numer ous and extensive in scope. This filiation has' served lo em phasize n the ever-increasing number of conservation disciples the necessity, of adopting radical measures, if need lie, for Ihe protection of Ihe forests. Kacli year sees more people availing themselves nf Ihe ue of I lie forests for recreation purposes; Ihe development of the forests In render the greatest good 1o Ihe greatest number the essence nf any forest policy is fast being realized, and il Is regrettable but true thai Ihe Greatest number is not Ihe hunt ing fraternity. Unless a chance in, season or some similar method of pre venting destruction can he in itialed 11 is not unlikely that a popular demand will voice il self for the prohibition of hunt ing California forest areas. j Sport Chat J Hilly Mlske, Ihe famous heavy weight boxer, who died in Min neapolis this week, in more than a hundred fights in bis career, "$C knocked out only once anil tnaf by Champion Jack Dempsey.
