LIQUOR VOTE IN ONTARIO Dlnklrnll. I n K a Tali.n ri O r ' bcr 23 on Possible Government Control TOHONTO, Oct. 13. (Hy Can-, adian Press . Ontario is in the throes of another battle over the liquor issue, Oct. 23 being the dale for (he taking of tbo plebiscite on question of continuance or repeal of the present prohibition law known as the Ontario Temperance Act and the substitution of government control of the sale of spirituous liquors for beverage purposes. It is a straight issue, between prohibition and government control, only two questions being before the olers. They are: 1 Are you in favor of the continuance of the Ontario Temperance Act? 2 Are you in favor of the sale ns a beverage of beer and spirituous liquors in sealed packages under government control? The voter will place an X after B the question he desires lo answer i in tbc affirmative. A mark after both questions will spoil the ballot. The questions seemed to call for the answer "yes" or "no" aflfr each and the first in ilrnfl of the ballot prepared contemplated of that form of verdict but following a conference called by Premier Ferguson and al-l"nded by reitresenlatives of both "wets" and "ilrys," it was announced (bat the task ut the voter had been reduced lo the mere placing of a cross after one of the questions. ' What Result Will Call For While there is no guarantee Dial the result of the plebiscite will be the government's guide in future legislation dealing with Hie liquor question it is generally il understood that a majority for government control will mean the early repeal of the Ontario Teni-, iterance Acl which came into er- feet by order-in-roiincil in t'JUl as a war measure. The possibility of such a development, however, deciiledlv uncertain, in view of the fact that Ontario has in the jipasl always voted for more re-! striclions on the liquor traffic whenever a straight issue has been placed before the people. The temperance people are nol resting on past victories, though. but have entered the present campaign with full steam up. Thousands of workers are em-!, ployed and hundreds of meetings are being held in support of the demand for continuance of the Prohibition Act. The Moderation League, championing government control. is also organized throughout the province and has many speakers engaged. The league is strongly presenting the flourishing of bootlegging as an1 nrgumenl for government control.
