DAILY EDITION Friday, August 22, 1921. . . . . .- a 5 Prince Rupert People r Should Know DistricL i The first duty of Prince Rupert people, and especially the ? business people is to know the district in which they live. The -Prince Rupert district is a large one. It includes Queen Char- lotte Islands, the mining and lumbering camps along the coast fand the interior points, particularly along the line of the Gana-J dian National Railway. None of these can be neglected. Just now there is a movement afoot to get local people to visit the interior for the annual fair at S.mi there and the barbecue at Telkwa. These are great opportunities not to be neglected if it can be avoided. The country beyond is a wonderful one. We 2 all like to talk and speculate about it but the main thing is to know iL This is a good time for travelling there and the oppor- tunity offers those who feel they are able to get away. Bring Steamers To This Port. Steamers have commenced coming north. This year es- penally vessels other than the roast passenger boats have been calling here. The aim of local businessmen should be to have them come oftener and .do more business. The way to build up a port is to provide business. Menlion has been made before this of the desirability of shipping Canadian salmon from this port. It is difficult to un-Z derstand why it is not done. If Alaska people find it pays them - to ship through Prince Rupert,, it is difficult to realize why ' Canadian do not da the same. It has been pointed out before that if the salmon is here the ships from the United Kingdom will call for it. By shipping direct from here there would be a saving to the shipper, but ap-- parently the salmon canners do not want to save money. They : prefer going on in the same old way and paying higher trans- : portation prices than they should, just because they 'have not , enough energy i) change. Bring Mackenzie King - - ' To Prince Rupert. This would be a very good .lime for Prince -ft upert to meet . Might Hou. W. L. .Mackenzie Jong to talk over1 with him the local situation. It is perhaps a little early for us to expect results ; from the visit of Sir Henry Thornton, but unless something I pretty definite is heard soon from the Dominion Government. strenuous efforts will have to be made' to lt Ihem know that we are on the map and are a factor to be reckoned with. While no . one believes in trying' to hurry the government too much, the wait has been a long one and some steps will have to be taken soon. There is a time for action in every big movement and that time may arrive before long. Danger From Bad Habits Illustrated. Ree keepers tell how the habit of stealing grows on a bee if it once starts so that it refuses to gather honey in the regular ' way. Its habits and appearance change through its change of - manner of making a living. The insect becomes sleek and sly aud carries all the marks of a rogue. The efforts of the bee keepers are devoted to preventing the bees starting on the downward course. Once they begin to rob it is difficult to stop them. Prairie Crops Not 8o Bad As Prophesied. It has been pointed out in this column, often that we suffer mostly because of our fears. The people on the prairies were in a very bad way this year, according to the early prophets. There was almost a scare throughout the country and business in all tines fell off. Now it is announced that the crops are not any thing like as bad as was expected. Manitoba will have a larger crop man last year and many other parts of the country will have .heavy orops. The Fight Is The Thing. People like to fight. It seems part of their nature. Brit ish people have been renowned as fighters since the beginning ui men iiisujij uuu iiiMui him iiuve giuruieu me an 01 war. Today there is a movement in the onnosile direction, caused largely because of the fact that war has changed from a sport to a numoie siaugnier. And yet the spirit of contest prevails among the people and will for many years. We like to see a fight in the ring between two wen trained pugilists who beat each other up. finn fighting is pupuiar in me movies, inuians spent much or their time fight jug each other, before the advent of the while neonle. Business is pretty much a fight. Contestants war with eaeh other aud sonietim'es the results are more tragic than in the more sanguinary conflicts of the past days. Fighting is bound to continue lor many a day and what will be the effect on the race 11 it uisappears, no one can say. are fresh fruit juices combined with tonics into the finest remedy for stomach, liver, kidney, and skin troubles. 25c and 50c a box at all dealers. A HICKTOWN is a place when-the loafers hang around the corners and tell shady slories. - FEW men care to tell where, when and how they proposed. They take so little joy in the' event. MOST of the things that are wrong with us are things that are either going to happen or not going lo happen. WHEN a man begins lo talk about his ills he is old. When a woman talks about hers she is on dangerous ground. THERE once was an umpire who admitted his decision wa? wrong, nut tnai was. so long age nobody remembers it. . - . THE people who are alway growling about the country going to the dogs do not have time t vote. TIME was when people driving bor.es cursed auto drivers foi scaring the animals. Now there I are hardly any horses to scare. - DO not be old-fashioned. How can you e.xpect to feed an auto on hay? ment clap on a new tax than the municipalities come along and want half of it. That is one of Ihe beauties of our complex democracy. I RELIEVE in democracy, con fusion, injustice, and incoin pelence because I have to But would like to abolish them all. Editor Daily .Vws: lu your editorial Thursday, July 31, you ait lhre urver was an exhibit of fish. I must tell you that you are mislead. Jn the first exhiition of prince Rupert 1912 or 1913, 1 had an exhibit of fish and was told by some of the fishermen and other parties interested in the fish business that it was the best I exhibit of smoked aud cured fish they ever saw. The Hon. Mr. iKIierson, then minister of agri culture, gave me great credit for the exhibit. He also had me s.hip ome of my product lo him lo his home years after. in luit or 1915 i also nail a good exhibit, which was highly appreciated by everyone who saw Showed at Toronto In 1913 the Dominion government paid express- charges for fisheries exhibits from li.G. to Toronto exhibition. Members of the board of trade came to me, I told them I would get an ex hibit together, although I had tn ship my exhibit to Vancouver by boat and badly handicapped for transportation Prince Rupert had! Ihe best exhibit from H.ti. Jud Thurber who was fishing out of Rupert will tell you that we had a write-up in a New York, magazine about that exhibit. I had Ci. Xickerson and several other prominent people (a see that exhibit and they told me I was lining more to advertise Prince Rupert than any other parly had done although it cost me personally quite a lot of Ijine and cash. On First Train The late President Hays open ed the railway in 1911, I put a good quantity of my product on Ihe train for his party and was highly commended by him and his parly on the product and had a letter from the lale President Hays personally. R. LeIJ, head of the Coloniza tion department, who was one. of the parly has been my personal friemt 'since anil I have shipped him smoked black cod to differ en! parts of the continent for his friends and he has been a great booster for me. Can be Done 1 would like you tn look up your files of Hie. first exhibition, tyj.' or 1913, l am nol sure as I have Ihe records in Rupert and you will also find I put an ex hibit in two years after. Which proves that you are wrong in your statement, that it ran be done if you have a man who knows bow. Would like to have credit where credit is due. Thanking you. W. 3HRUHSALL.
