One on the most remarkable and notorious characters in Hussia is of Itussian-Oermaii named Nicholas Shuman, who is railed "the r.nmmissar of Death" bv the na- lives of Oeorgia. He derives this sinisler title from the fact that for a long time he was the offi-icial executioner of the dreaded Cheka in southern Hussia. His victims ran into the thousands. Shuman is now remorseful for the heads he has cleaved, anil has turned from human butcher ing to rug-selling in the bazaars Tiflis. He may be seen any day hawking his wares to Ameri can or other foreign visitors to the Georgian capital. He is easily identified by the natives by ithe fact that his harsh, deter mined face is marked by a deep scar, the result of a violent at tack made upon him with a huge iron spike, by an aggrieved ieor-xiau whose friends Shuman had put to death. "I killed these people," said Shuman In the correspondent, "because it was my duty as official executioner for the government to do so. I could never have done it in my personal capacity. I am repentant and want to forgel the past. I want to develop my better side. Do you think there is nny chance for me (in America as a rug merchant? I hear yon have much money there. I will lake a part of it for roy rugs." TO liUROl'ii l VfAKF. K! .KVATli INS N()W FROM QUEBtC TO CHCRBOURO'SOUTHAMPTON- NOV.
