A little girl who went for an evening stroll with
a neighbor’s dog last Tuesday and’ got lost in the
heavily-wooded country on Porcher Island has been
found alive.

cette was discovered last night

and minutes after a search

Tracking is usually hopeless if
the trail is more than 20 hours
old, said Sanderson.

Mrs. Doucette was with ‘the
searchers most of the time, get-
ting only a few hours’ sleep un-
til last night when she spent
the night in the Prince Rupert
Hotel.

Her husband remained at
Humpback Bay with their 18-
month-old baby girl. Mr. Dou-
cette was out fishing when his
daughter went missing but re-
turned to port Wednesday
morning to join in the hunt.

After Jury's
Death Verdict

VANCOUVER (CP) — Harold
John Hughes, a 49-year-old ac-
countant, was released from pb-
lice custody last night after a
| coroner's jury returned an open
verdict in the death of his wife.
Hughes had been held as a
material witness.

The jury did not classify the
death Aug. 9 of Joyce Sowden
Hughes, 39. Jurors ruled only on
the cause of death—“asphyxia
from carbon monoxide poison-
ine.”

Mrs. Hughes was found dead
in the couple’s apartment dur-
ing the morning after tenants
asked the landlady to investi-
gate gas fumes in the building.
Mrs. Hughes was on top of the
bed, fully clothed.

Detective Jeff Cocker testified
that Hughes had told him he
had been drinking with his wife
and that he had been with her
all night in, bed.

Clarenee Foster, inhalation
crew member, quoted Hughes as
saying he had gone to bed
shortly after his wife and that
gas from open jets had affected
her, but not him.

“I didn’t even have a head-
ache,” Foster quoted Hughes as

BURNS LAKE—A usually careful housewife living near the
baseball park was putting the finishing touches to her Sunday
dinner.

She basted a big chicken for the last time, covered it in
the oven and went to call her family for dinner just as the
victorious Burns Lake “Comets” were being cheered by the
visiting losers from Smithers.

The children took their places at the table. The housewife
reached in the oven for the chicken. It was gone.

Two “gentlemen of the road” had been seen prowling
around the cabins in the afternoon, but they have not been
seen since. Nor has the chicken.
