Two Captains in One Boat Heing an account of a trip to the Ecstall River as recounted by Newton I'ullen of Victoria under the nom de plume of Marcus Drexell in the Victoria Colonist. THE JOURNEY ENDS By the next morning the river had gone down considerably. We packed a lunch and went canoeing above the falls, taking photographs on the way. While the day was cloudy the rain held off. It was not long before we had to make a portage around some rapids, and shortly after we had launched the canoe again we found ourselves bucking a swift current. II was hard work and ti.. one stretch we resorted to a combination of lowing and paddling. After lunch the return trip began and was made rapidly. After we had taken tlie canoe overland 10 a spot neiow the big falls 'again, I tried my hand at fishing and had good luck, getting enoiigli for supper. Travelling along th Ilig Slough once 'again after an absence of seven days, wc encountered engine trouble. It had begun to rain again when the engine quit and refused lo start. After a spark plug had been shattered and the trouble had not been found, we rowed into he N'orth I'acific Cannery for aid. A while fisherman, who said hat he had made $110 that week, tested our battery and found it weak. Outside the cannery we encountered Mr. Lord, the man ager. Neilhep of us had shaved since we had let Prince Rupert, the Other Captain had some con spicuous tears in his clothes, and I was 'wearing no cap on my untidy head. Our appearance must have bordered on the vil lainous, but instead of ordering us off the properly, Mr. Lord took us in hand! escorted us to the store to buy a spark plug, robbed an engine in the cannery of its set of batteries, and came down to the boat lo see if there was anything else he could db. New Battery The new battery did Ihe trick. and after that we had no further trouble with the engine, fly this time the boats of the fishing fleet were coming up the Slough to Ihe canneries for Ihe night.
