Any of us would object to getting up in the middle of the night to work unless he were a doctor an.l then he could charge enough for the service lo make it worth while. Those Tf us to whom a dollar an hour looks big would kick like steers if we were asked lo gel iKiwu lo the office at four o'clock in the morning. Yet in the name of spurt four .o'clock is quite an attractive time to turn out. Fie is rather late and six is only the hour -at which amateurs at the game would think of .showing up. Just as an illujtralion let me tell you about our little jaunt. It look plac' last Sunday. W'y had been up rather, late the night be- rore ami it was one o clock wiien e finally decided that we would turn out Ai foilr ami see what we could do among the ducks around iHitictin Hay. Jlill and Tommy uiul parted then with lhe promise cm their part that they would give me a call at four, a few minute later we would meet at the Huston Orill and then we could leave the float by five. Sharp on Time II was xjuarter to two before I finally cliuJjcd between Mm sheets, tired after n .somewhat strenuous efeiiing. At four Mm alarm sounded and as I did not hear fromr hc others I gave Tommy a ring, lie stuttered a little hut said he'd be there and on linv we riwt at Mm eats joint. Hill had not been heard from Tommy went to fetch him and found that he had set tils alarm Tor five instead of four. He capitulated, howrever, and soon ar rived to join in the slaughter of Mm hot cake.. . - . Then tlirf wa;lhe question of urn gun. I na.t arranpe.no sor row one and the good lady who lent it said she would pul it out side in the hall. It was not there so what was I to do but call her ul of bed at that unearthly hour and have her gel the gun for me. Arriving at the boat house wm could ep another party wstiuler-ing around .in the dark getting a boat under way. This was cheering. We were not Mm only fools in town and we told them so, much lo their amusement. Two Officers At Mm boat Hill Undertook Mm work of chief engineer an.l Tommy was helmsman, but as Hill was chief. Hill relinquished his post at the engine and Tommy gav up Mm tiller, an.l I, IxMngftMer and only an A.M., while tlmy were officers, tried to get a course by Mm city lights behind, and later by a lone star that pierced Mm fug from overhead. Tim hoys had been dancing all evening and naturally were rather' tired and two hours it must be admitted is rallmr short for a night's ret. Approaching Metlakatla the lawn was breaking and we could e an occasional flock of ducks passing. We were all wide awake now' and looking at Mm giins and thinking of Duncan Hay. ami visions of flocks of mallards and perhaps a goose wr two. Stalking the Duck Nrriving we decided to leave Mm boat and they would remain at Mm bay while I walked along Mm beach to Swamp Island where limy would later pick me up. We rl off bravely and prelly soon I heard a couple of shots and could hardly keep myself from reluming to see whal tlmy ha.d. There were ducks jn the water all along Mm" beach hut too far off. Then I saw a lone duck near shore and, getting a rock between him and me I commenced lo stalk him. He was a little suspicious an.l as I approached I saw him live. That was my opportunity. I rushed forward without hiding and by Mm time he enme up, was well within gunshot. Without giving him a chance to rise from Mm water I fired and killed him wilh Mm firsi shot. Unfortunately, however, Mm tide carried him away from shore and I never recovered Mm game. That was the first of four Mint I killed nn later I found that Hill had three. There was other shooting, however. Hounding a corner n crow came close overhead. Tim first shot made him dodge and Mm second brought him volplaning to the beach where I found him dead when I came up. There were a number pf-other attempt to slaughter the birds but limy seemed lo fly away, frightened by Mm noise doubtless. Lunch At Swamp. Island there was lit tle sign of birds. In ten minutes I was awakened by InlrnsV heat and found my pants leg afire but not seriously damaged.
