On fair way ... to rival J in fame Hi she-bear thai occupies so pro mineut a place in the mythical stage of the history of Home, the white she-cub at Ueacon Hill Park has now become the pro perty of the Crown. A formal ordeff of Police Mag istrate Jay has been made con fiscaling the cub and giving il into the care of ; the curator of the Provincial Museum. The order was made by the magis Irate on an application made on behalf of the Provincial Police by Major Hruee Irving. Close Season Captive The cub is declared by the police lo be a' she one and lias been seized under (lie provisions of the liauie Act, il having been illegally in captivity during the close season. A great deal of interest sur-ounds I he bear owing to the fact thai it is the first of the Ursus Kernurdet "which has been taken alive, and' as such has attracted Ihiilfnljon of a wide circle of scT$nti.sjs throughout the continent The species is a rare one.'confined as far as can lie learned ' to the islands of Princess Hoyal and Cribble. As far as the history of the captive is known lo Hie police and the (lame Hoard, tho cub came into the; possession of Indians, who- in turn, sold it to O. W. FloweisV of Ocean Falls, who paid $00 for it, and then ap plied lo the (.laiiio .Hoard for a ree DABYS 1 JVXtFARE I This Baby Welfare Book and this Baby Record wilt be sent you free on request. Took It to Vancouver Mr. Flowers, in turn, brought the cub to Vancouver and made an offer lo sell il lo the care taker of Stanley Park, asking $100 for (lie animal. The deal did not go through, and the hear was left in the care of the care taker of the park there. The next stage in the proceed ing was that, acting for the amc Hoard, the Provincial Police in Vancouver took out a search warrant and seized the cub. Following this il was brought here and temporarily placed in charge of the curator of the Museum, who was made the official custodian by order of the court. ROSE HARBOR IS LEADING One Station Gets 127 Out Total of 272 for Whole Coast of VICTORIA. Aug. 13. Hose Harbor is leading -in this sea son's catch of whales so far, ac cording lo a report received yes terday bv Captain La Marquand of the Consolidated Whaling Corporation. Whales are running well this year but weather con ditions have been unfavorable lo Hie whalers in I lie north, es pecially during I lie past two weeks. Thick fog hanks have prevented the whalers from locating any big herds. So far this season 272 whale have been caught, and of this number the Rose Harbor boals caught 12". Kyuquot whalin station, on t lie west coast of Vancouver Island, comes second witli 118 whales, and Naden Har-I bor, in t lie Queen Charlotle Is lands, and the smallest of Ihe three, comes last with 17 whales. .... Sel Whales Plentiful Sei whales are the most plentiful and Hie northern waters are proving prolific. Of the 272 whales caught so far this sea son 100 of them have been Seis. with the sperm whale coming second. A few finbacks, hump backs and sulphur whales have also been caught. England is proving the best-market this year for whale oil, while the United Slates in making a strong de mand for the sperm oil. Several shipments of the whale oil have already been sent to Olosgow by the C.O.M.M. freighters, while Ihe inlercoaslal steamers are de livering the sperm oil lo Cincinnati and Hamilton. Liners Sigh Herds Reports have been received from deep-sea liners entering Ibis porl thai large herds of whales have been sighted; The Empress of Canada had' an es pecially exciting experience on her last trip from the Orient when she ha.l to sleer clear of several schools of these sea monsters, but eventually fell foul of one herd and was furiously attacked by a fifteen ton bull. who met his death -quite heroi cally on the bow of the liner while trying to protect his cows. Caplain La Marquand is to benefit by these reports and is in hopes of getting heller weather. The whalers, be staled, will not return until about .Octo ber, so thai there is yet time to make a real good each.. Whale meat looks and tasles like beef. The use of whale meal for human consumption js by no means a new institution.' The old-time American whalerinen ut of Nantucket and New Hed ford regaled themselves on lusty whale scraps wiuio they were trying out Ihe carcase for oil. The catching and canning of whale meat is now a recognized Canadian Industry on the Pacific Coast, and two stations and can neries are located on Vancouver Island's west coast, and' shipments of canned whale meal are being sent lo the European and Oriental markels in inciyasing quantities. The Japanese especially are very fond of whale meal. A deli, cacy in Japan is sailed whale lails and nearly every Japanese liner that leaves this port ."from now until the end of the fall will lake out small consignment of i sailed whale lails.
