The best news arriving here since the announcement of the elevator contract is that telling of the reopening at once of the Duthie Mines on Hudson Bay Mountain near Hmilhers. The engineer in charge has gone to Hmithers to make arrangements for the work. The mine has been tied up for some time owing to a disagreement between the owners in regard to operation. At the same time that the Federal'lining and Smelting Company closed down the Duthie mines they also stunned work at Dome Mountain and removed their nlachinery. The violence ned in connection with the coal strike Nova Seolia is a severe blow to democratic institutions. in As long as people cannot keep the peace at home it is not to be ex peeled Ilia t petire between nations can be a permanency. It is not presumed here to give any opinion as to the Tight ness oj me cause or the miners or of Die operators. Both undoubtedly consider they are right. The raue of any side is considerably -weakened, however, when it is eonsidereit that violence is necessary in order to enforce it. There -.is always a lot of suffering, ill will, hale, and irreparable loss as tlie result of any strike. When extreme measures are taken by either side this is accentuated and the scars remain for many years. Government Vessels And The Drydock Almost every week. Open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday Evenings From the review of develop- meiit-ithe only conclusion that inayilie drawn is that it has been very satisfactory .Hits" year and gives every indication that next year will see even greater advancement towards jireater Pa llidum. The standing ofthe district as the leading producer of gold and 'lively short time copper tn llie province is very ratifying, in that it demon-trales that, given capital welt pent, the district will give a ood account of itself. The above facts profe the, lability of the mining industry for' this portion' of the province and that a very optimistic view of the future is warranted. Tonnage and Values Tonnage The total of 1,21)7,-1 .68 Ions is the greatest ever mined In this district in one year, bowing an increase of 20.8 per ent over that of last year. It is accounted for in the increased lonnaige of the (iranby, Itelmont- urf Inlet and Premier Compan ies, A greater numiier or tons have also been shipped by the small producers, but this does not materially affect the total, l iranby has mined over 200,000 tons mote thai last year, due to t lie shjpments from its Outsider .property at Maple Bay ami the tonnage from, the Hidden Creek mines to the new coneenlmfnr. Premier also shows an increase or nearly 15,000 tons over last year. The increase over last year is therefore 10.4 per cent. or.37.1 per cent of the total increase ror the province. . The placer gold output for the year is 117,000 from Atlin Di vision and $3,323 from the Sllkine and LianJ Divisions, mak ing a total or iro..J2r ror this district, which is -about normal production. Sliver and Copper Silver exceeds Hist year' out put by 21)1,055 oz., a gain o! Mining Engineer Optimistic I Over Future Development of Industry in this District in summarizing the mining industry foe the year in this district, George Clothier, district engineer, in' his annual report lo the minister or mines, says: t The prospecting branch of the industry showing increasing activity from year lo year in this district tor Mwo reasons: First the betterment of transportation by the ibliilding or government trails and roads and the assistance lo prospectors by grants from the Mines Department have grenlly lessened the hardship of prospecting; and, second, the fact, that a prospector capital capuai is is - - is now assured that forthcoming for a meritorious showing. and Belmont-Surf in increase of 3,- 210,152 lb., about 0.0 per cent over last year, and 15 per cent of the total increase for the province. Belnvuil-iSiirf Inlet .contributed a gain of 107,710 lb. and (iranhy about 3.012,111 lb. Cranny's output or 35.5)1)2,720 lb. is the .greatest in its history. The district therefore pro duceil this year 30 per cent of Mho total placer gold or the pro vince. 1 3 pep cent pr the total lode pobl, 12 per cent of the to tal silver, and 50 per cent of the total copper; praetically the same percentages as last year notwithstanding the substantial increase of each of the metals for Hie whole province. Again forecasting future- pro duction, it would seem reasonable to expect an even greater output. The Oranhy Consolidated Mining, Smelting, and Power I Company has only had results j from the. new concentrator for n portion of thrr year, and under 'normal conditions, wilh main tenance of lis present- smelter output, will very probably show n gain next year. Premier Is Stable The Premier Oobl Mining Company under '"osent operal- iug conditions is probably up to capacity production. The Dunwelt .Mines, Limited, bad announced that shipment would lie made during the winter, but lack or power due to the severity or the weather ne cessitated closing down completely. Whether the- properly will make immediate shipments depends on the- fulure policy doubled upon by the owner. Hither shipments of '-sorted nre may bo made or the property may be equipped with a concentrator. The Porter-Idaho will in all probability be developed during ll)2o. The Hsperanza at Alice Arm will no doubt continue lo make small shipments of sortwl high grade ore. ConlluwouV shipment to the (iranby smeller nre expected from the (lolskcish, near Anyox. From the B.C. Silver Mines. Limited, adjoining IhV Premier, a few Ions was shipped, more n a trial shipment than us an indi cation of a steady output for the present. ' Another small shipment was made during the siinvmer from the Atlin Silver-Lead Mines, Limited, but steady production is not expected until sufficient development work can be done to properly open up Ihe shnwim:-. At Alice Arm llecent developments on the Toric at Alice Arm give this properly a very promisti.g chance. The Indian, which looked so promising1 in the upper tunnel, is undergoing sifme very interesting development at depth. Several other properties in different parts of the- district have been giving very encouraging results in development. Placer mining has been about normal, but is gradually declining in this district. Upper Spruce Creek at Atlin will doubtless keep up the present production for some ears.
