Phone 93 Outlook for Mining on Islands Brighter; Black Sand Project Graham Island Reported Upon From Annual Heport of Hcsident Mining Engineer) The Queen JJhnrlolle Islam! Division has hail more activity in mining this year, due to the experiments in the recovery of gold from the bench black sands of Mnsset Inlet mid the east and north coasts of Graham Island.. Apparently these have been conducted in a thorough and competent manner; the results obtained, therefore, give every reason to believe that this industry will develop into something worth while. Further oil investigations were made on the west coast and interior fields of Graham Island, Shuttle Island produces a lilllo gold .each year. Altogether the outlook is brighter, than usual. There has been great activity this yqar in slaking and investigating the beach sands at Mas-sett and on the north and east coasts. The records show that 'thirty-nine- Ierfses have leen granted and six more applied for. These being 80 acre leases, represent a total of 3,000 acres, apparently an abundance of. sands if the gold recovery can be made profitable. P.B.C. Mnes. P.H.C. Mines Co. is a State of Delaware incorporation with an authorized capitalization of $75,- 000. The head office is at Dover, Delaware. It was registered in Hrilish Columbia on March 3t, 1921, as an extra-provincial company, with a paid up capital of $70,000, with its head office at Victoria. The company's holdings consist of seven hydraulic leases situated on Mm northeast coast of Graham Island; one Jeasv is recorded in the name of the company and his. .are owned by the three in dividual stockholders compris ing the company. Operations have been under the supervision of Chas. T. Cabrera, with D. It. Willemar as assayer, starting the latter part of March and continuing up to October. At the time 1 was on the grQurid, May 13, tests were being made on sands obtained from Massed Inlet, but opera tions were shortly afterwards transferred to Rose Spit, where the majority of the experiments and tests wero made. The, fol lowing information was obtained from Chas. T. Cabrera, who, n staled, supervised all the work; Preliminary Tests Preliminary Jests consisted of thorough sampling of the sands at 'Massed Inlet, concentration, and fire assays to determine their average gold content. V.x periments in concentration were made by hand-rockers, sluicing, etc., and it was determined that any form of concentrating may be used and that an 8-to-l con central ion carried the most gold in the concentrate and the least in the tailings. Over a ton of concentrates, obtained as above were used for fjrc assays and for cyanide-test runs In a Hracen Laboratory cyanide outfit, having two leaching tanks holding 50 lb. each, bottom and top feei for solutions, one settlinjg lank, and one sump lank. The record of results of both cyanide and fire ass-ays was sufficiently en couraging to warrant going ahead on a producing basis, any in June the ereclion of a cyanide plant was started on the beach at Massed. The building is 8t I by 10 -feet, In which have been insiaiieu, so lar, six 8 by 5 foot leaching tanks, each Willi capae-ily of 8 Ions of concentrates the balance- of Ihe equipment will pe Installed, it is claimed at an early dale. An assay office complete in every detail, a black smith shop, a bunk house, and a residence have been built on land purchased in the townsite of Massed. At Rose Spit, on Ihe northeast coast of -Graham. Island, tests and experimental work were car ried on during July, August, and September. Forty-seven test was installed. The consists of three 5 by leaching tanks; two i by I Tout settling tanks; one by t foot solution tank; one sump tank; one 10 coinpartuieiit zinc box; an ore car and 100 feet of 12 lb. rails; hand pumps were used in the plant and water obtained from a well, using gas engine and rotary pump. Details of Treatment t Highly tons of sands, just as Jected to a leaching sal-soda solution for one hour; this was iralned off at the rate of G inches per hour; the charge was .then covered with one-quarler of 1 per cent cyanide solution and treated iby, percolation for seventy-two hours, the solution draining into a settling; tank where the cyanide contenl was Hint the results were sufficiently conclusive to justify Jie erection of a 100 ton daily capacity plant at Rose Spit. Should Ibis plant be successful there is plenty of area of auri ferous sands for other similar enterprises. BUSINESS.
