PEACE RIVER RAILWAY AGAIN Edmonton Newspaper says Pre- mer Greenfeldi has Definite Offers from Companies DEPENDS ON ALBERTA Neighboring Province Holds Key to Situation In Edmonton, Dunvegan & B.C. Railway The Peace River railway out come depends very largely on what action the province of Al geria takes in (lie next few months. Premier Greenfield has returned from the East wilh two definile offers, according to I lie Edmonton .Journal which says: Transfer of Alberta's natural resources and settlement of the northern railway question are both substantially nearer limn tliey have ever been 'before, ac cording lo Premier Greenfield, who has just returned from a ten weeks' mission to Ottawa anrl Montreal. What seems lo be the last chapter in the negotiations has heen reached in each case, but the final page hasn't turned over yet. The latest word on the re sources question is (hat Premier Greenfield has a definite understanding from the prime minister that '4ml ween now and Ihe next dominion session the agree ment already drawn up as to the details of the settlement will be finally reviewed and lhal it will then be laid before parliament for ratification. And as lo the railways, the premier has brought, back with him two black and while, oflicial, awl precise offers for Ihe future operation of Ihe Dunvegan and Canada Central lilies. One is from Ihe Canadian Pacific and Ihe other is from Ihe Canadian National. Which is lo 'be ac cepted is the question now to be decided. Two Better Offers Both offers for Ihe railways lines have been lonsiderably al tered since the recent negotia tions began. The mailer of land1 subsidies has been eliminated, the lease-period reduced, ami various other conditions.-; modi fied. It is s 111 to" bo a Case of leasing, not huying, . but. the lerjns will, lie belter than they have been. v "Whichever offer is finally ac cepted and whichever of Ihe com panies gets the lines, Ihe transportation situation in the north will be much improved," says the premier. "Of that I am certain, for Ihe conditions set out in either offer will guarantee a settlement distinctly more advan-fauious to Ihe Peace River coun try in particular and the province' in general. We have still a good deal lo do before the end is reached. The cabinet musl go into (lie two offers and decide he tween Ihem. Then we must draw up an agreement and Ihe necessary legislation. And also we must gel the consent of Ihe Royal hank, which holds the 'common slock as security. The mailer will then go to the legis lature." Before House Meets Asked as to whelher or not Ihe adjourned session of the legislature will meet on August 3, Ihe dale lns named provisionally, Mr. Greenfield nid II. will depend upon how fast these remaining details can be. disposed of. The government will move at once, and now that definite offers' from Ihe C.P.R. and C.N. II. have been secured it will be possible to deal wilh Ihe other interested pin ties and lo come lo final terms. The premier's first effort at Ottawa, he says, was lo secure some form, of direct assistance from Ihe federal government, either as a grant 'to reduce the E.D & H.C. freight rales to the prairie basis or In help the provincial government lo meet capital charges. ' In this, however, he was unsuccessful, and the only- course' left was lo get the hest possible offers from the railway companies. Tbe offers as now in hand were lire outcome of negotiations willi Sir Henry Thornton and E. V. Ileal ly. the two railway chief executives. BUILDING MESS HOUSE AT ELEVATOR FOR USE ! MEN EMPLOYED THERE Jack Nelson has already started t lie construction of a mess house for Geo. Richmond at. Hie elevator site. The building will be of goorl dimension and . will be large! enough to accommodate fully 100 al one silting.' If there is need lo serve more during the meal hour, a second sitting will be arranged as is done now in the largo camps such as Anyox and Ocean Falls. ' - .The mess house will naturally be able lo accommodate each shift, and if later lliere should be three shifts opera Diner it will mean a continual service during the twenty-four hour day. The building will be ready shortly, as i( is expected there will be a de mand for it before long. ADDITION TO STAFF OF SALVATION ARMY Lieut Xenny Coming From Saskatoon: Guards Corps Going Camping "at Cedarvale To such an extent has Ihe work of the local Salvation Army increased here that an increase in stuff has become necessary. Lieut. Kenny of Saskatoon has been appointed lo assist Captain and Mrs. Rea and will arrive in Ihe city on July 23. Arrangements have jut been completed for the life saving scouts .and guards of Hie local turps ' jnf the Salvation Army which was organized nix months ago, lo go into camp ui ueuar- vale.at the QhL Touiljnson Mission on July 20 and remuin un-til August 3. Steady progress has been made with Ibis corps and a number of1 the members have bought the official uniform. This is necessary lor several reasons, and one is that from now on there will be a gradual shortening of the days, and so shorter even ings lo play, and if the starting of Ihe games is delayed it will mean a very much shorter game than planned. This is not satis factory either lo players or fans, and, where possible, should be avoided. A team, which might be in Ihe lead might be glad to quit at Ihe end of the seventh inning, and the team which is behind always feels hopeful of overtaking Iho lead and perhaps winning in the end. A little cooperation from all concerned would do much lo help matters. The baseball game between teams representing the Rotary and Gyro clubs to be played Ibis afternoon js attracting consider able attention. It is suggested that some of the players in Iheir enthusiasm lo get into shape for the bailie have done a little overtraining and at this time are sore and stale. A number of substitutes are available, however, and the game should proceed wfll0ul any undue interruption. The Veterans line up tonight against Ihe Gallics in the final for the Dominion Cup will be as follows: S. Gawthorne, S. Ers-kine and V. Mcnzies, R. B. Skinner, W. Murray, and G. Mitchell, W. Barton, F. Russell, II. Nor wood, J. R, Mitchell and D. Gur-vich. Reserves B. Long and F. Hunter. Hockey has heen made a major sport al Princeton University. All racing cars entering big auto speed classics must qualify al more, than 100 miles an hour, In Portugal, the most popular sports are lawn tennis and foot hull. Dick llaugh, who is playing so well in the West Bioinich de fense, is a son, of the old Wol verhampton player of that name. This is his first season wilh the Albinos, but he had previously done good work for the Wolver hamplon Wanderers, and, but for an injury, lie would have' played for them,, ,iu , .the. 1021 , final against tjiucsj;. ri -. Good centre-forwards are al ways hard to find, hut the climax appears lo have been reached in England this reason. Actually 370 players have had a trial in this onerous posilion. Only six have iilavcil in every game for their clubs Ibis season. FOOTBALL FIXTURES MOBLEY LEAGUE CUP Snnond Half i I Monday, July 13 Storage vs. S.O.F.. Thursday, July 1(5 Callies vs. t: W.V.A.
