It would lie very interesting to learn why the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and the Haanich Council want the succession tax removed. The matter is to come before the Union of Municipalities at the meeting late, in the summer. The ideal method, it would seem, would, be. for each person iii the world to start equal in the race for a livelihood. That could he brought ubout by the abolition of the succession -duties and the abolition of inheritance. Let the stale inherit everything on the death of the individual. That syslem is liable to a good deal of abuse, so the present system provides for a considerable tax on Ihe estate of a person that dies. It cannot work a hardship on the real owner, as he is gone, neither is it a hardship on the heir, because until he gets the money or property, it is not his. For Hie stale to lake a part is reasonable. The tendency of the day is for the stale to take an ever increasing slice of lhe .property until possibly in HiiV distant future we shall find the stale taking everything and the young hoy or girl starting out in life with' nothing but what nature provided. As all would start on Ihe same fooling there would, be no 'hardship lo any 'one. ' Municipality Tired ' Of Transportation. Haanich municipality is getting tired of running a transportation system II has opcraled buses for some time and now it proposes to, go out of the business by turning the. syslem over lo Hie .people. ul the district served by it. Tbe district would organize a private company and , run their own system -or do without just as they wished. Electricity And Development. One of the greatest factors making for industrial development- today is the liariiossiug of -water powers anil the use of electoral energy. This is pretty well shown in statistics just published. Ontario loads, the country in electrical development ir now, , bill she is closely mildly Queh'ec, the one having 1,500,000 horse- power ana oilier j.iiini.otiu. The 'third province in the list is British Columbia Which iuls-.pretly close to 100,000 horse power developed. Manitoba lias not yet 200,000 horse power and the other provinces each less than 100,000. .So we find Ontario leading Canada in industrial -develop nieiit with Quebec a close second and British Columbia Mini.
