HOW TO PLAY FOOTBALL Plans of DefenceStopping the Attack and Teaching Team Formation (By "Andy" Ducat, Manager of Fiilhain Chili.) (Keprlnlert rroro "Greenock Herald") Which plan of defence pays best? It depends on the style of game your opponents are play Short passing is the vogue now with many professional teams. I he attack most often comes in the form of n short-passing bout between the centre and his inside men. That is why the halves need to concentrate on this inside trio. Another thing is that while the halves are. attending to the nside men they are not so scattered over the . ground. Short passes between themselves and the forwards become easier when they open up a counter attack. Stopping the Attack For myself, however, I remain convinced that for amalcurj teams the plan of having the halves mark the opposing whig forwards holds most advantages. You may take it for granted that the halves ought to do the hardest work; they are men specially picked out as having the lamina to hold the team to- rnllipiv in amaicur inoiri.ill llie attacks most often come down the wings. That Is why the halves must mark the wingers. The reason why the attack so oflen comes down the wjng in amateur football is that few amateur teams play the short passing game. The ball is run down by swinging il out to wing .Most amateur teams nave a speedy winger, and lliey rely on this man for a solo effort to wards the opponent's goal. Drib bling, too, plays a greater part in imalcur football Minn in pro fessional. Y'our halves ought lo bo where the attack is, and that is why they should mark the opposing wing forward, leaving the in side men lo the backs. Don't make a hard and fast rule, however. If you find that the opposing, team is adopting short passing tactics in the con- Ire of the forward line, then your halves should turn their attention to the inside men. They should not do this, howover, un til they are instructed to do so by their captain. If each lialf takes il into his own head to change his tactics when he feels like jl, he will throw the, whole team out of gear. The general plan should be lo have the halves mark the opposing wing forwards. v Then, if the captain sees that a change Is needed, the word must be given so that the whole defence adopts the new system! In enn- cerl. - Teaching Team Formation Teams should know these two plans for defence, and under stand tho reasons for them. Then, on the field, instructing the backs and the halves which A plan which is'- sometimes adopted profitably is that' lit making one half interchangeable with a back. You have seen thai when an attack is coming down the right wing tho right back goes up to meet the attackers as far away from his own goal as possible. The left back moves over to the middle of Ihe field to cover his comrade. II may happen that his alien lion is immediately enguged on the right, o that you have two hacks over 'on Ihe right, anil a dangerously vacant 7.oneon the lefl. Such a contingency docs not happen to teams which make a wing half interchangeable with Ihe back. As Ihe nltiick was on sip through. "Elastic" Defence Wins I'Jie. ideal defence is one that forms at a moment's notice to meet an attack from any quarter. In these articles I have set out several methods of meeling various kinds of attack. It is fully possible to explain thee methods on a blackboard il is being done now by several pro fessional learns and I am convinced that it would pay an amateur team to assemble once a week for the working oul of examples in black and while. The alternative is lo have one fixed form of defence. Tha is dangerous, and may lead to qui.k disaster. Thus, in the example above, (he left half might have remained up the field to dog the footsteps of I bo opposing wing forward if his marking, of the winger had been a fixed defensive policy with the team. . Whereas the particular circumstances of both backs being oyer on the right demanded that lie should leave the opposing forwards altogether for a little while, to lake the place of the left back as a second line of Sporr Chat When the fishermen ofl.unen the right in the example minted. i Mrs. Cody. 2b.: Thelma Deelh the len naif would tie .standing ss.; Margaret Dupuis, 3b.; Annie ill lit. wiiii noming in no on Ills own side for Hie moment.
