INSPECTION OF FIRE FIGHTING IN THIS CITY I Provincial Fire Marshal on Visit Here Finds Everything Very Satisfactory in his way back to Vancouver after attending the convention-of I lie National Fire Protection Association at Chicago, J. Alfred Thomas, fire marshal for the province of Itritisb Columbia was a visitor in the city at the end of the week. Mr. Thomas arrived on Saturday night's train and sailed last evening on the Prince Rupert for Vancouver. While here, Mr. Thomas inspected the PrinCe Rupert Spruce Mills' plant at Seal Cove and also the local fire department. From a fire protection point of view, Mr. Thomas found the mill in good order. There was an open burner there but it is practically on the water and is no menace to surrounding property. Mr. I'hoiTias was pleased with the appearance of the fire depart ment and gratified thai new equipment bad been Obtained since lie was last here. Coming wust, Mr. Thomas stopped off at Hums Lake to in-.pei l the situation there following the recent' fire. It is ililliejilt for small places to be fully equipped with fire protection de vices. Prevention can be ob -tained, however, at such places by having as 'good a class of buildings as possible erected with some space between them. After attending the convention in Chicago, Mr. Thomas took laboratory courses in sprinkler, valve and domestic oil burner inspection. The latter, Mr. Thomas says, are coming into very gen- erat use in the province.
