WAGE INCREASE MOVE REJECTED Delegation from Industrial Union Given Short Shrift by- City Council A delegation of six from the General Construclion Workers' Industrial Union, No. 310 waited on the city 'Council last night and asked that the wages of ail men employed b I lie city in construction work In- aised from the present scale lit $5 per day. Alderman Perry moved dial the delegation be not heard as it was not the proper place to discuss the general wage conditions in the country. This was s.econded iby Alderman Smith. Alderman Casey thought llial the delegation was entitled to be heard and accordingly moved an amendment which was seconded by Alderman Drown and was carried, those opposing being Alderman iSmilli and Perry. Leonard Wade then addressed the council on behalf of. the delegation, and sought to meet any criticism which might be made as to this proposed increase. He referred to the city's debt and said that statistics showed fhal the cities which are most in debt are the ones which are most progressive. He felt the taxpayers should not begrudge this as it was necessary to keep the standard of living up, and the workmen did no I have full time on account of weather conditions here. In the course of a year the income was not sufficient to meet the de mands of a fair standard of living. Quoting from the Labor Gazelle, he said he could show thai the average price of com modities in Prince Hupert was 22 per cent higher than in other cilies in Canada. The province oT R.C. was 10 per Cent .higher than atiy other province in Can ada, and llrince Rupert was 10 per cenl higher than any city in the province, so the increase was necessary to maintain a propel standard of living. Wb-un Mr Wade finished, Acting Mayor Stephens asked him two or three (jueslions as to whom .be re presented, how many he represented, and bow many of Hies-were cily employees and hou many of them were married men with families in;lhe. city. ; Mr. Wude said he represented npproxiuialely 100 men and a large numlter of them were men with fumllics in the city. After ascertaining that no other member of the delegation desired to speak, Alderman Casey moved that the- letter from this Union bo received 'and filed nnd that the ropiest be not granted. This was seconded by Alderman McKechnie nnd car riei) unanimously without dis eussion. The delegation then withdrew.
