Phones 116 and 117 192 There i it large tract of ferlile country, part of which is in British Columbia, that require opening up by o railway to the coat, , Everyone recognizes the need of n railway but there are all sorts of adverse currents interfering with its proper develop ment. In the first place there is a railway already built into the country by Ihe province of Alberta to within a few miles of the British Columbia boundary. This railway is at present being, laby" operated by. the CP.R. under lease, but it is losing money forl.f the operators .and they do not-like continuing as nl present and neither do they like to let go, as by holding on they have a prior right to Ihe development uf that part of the country. The British Columbia government has a railway pointing in the direction of the Peace River. It runs at pivent from Squamish to (Juesnel and the grade is completed to Prince (leorge. It will cost about five million dollars to romplele Ibis f line from Vancouver to Prince deofge. The British Columbia government is asking mat me Dominion government mums a line to be built front Prince (leorge into the Pence country connecting with Iheir railway which would make its operation profitable, it is thought. The Canadian National already has a first rate railway to the coast at Prince Riiperl with which any Peace River road cppUL conneJ jal any one of various points including Hansard I'niiee oeorge, amlerlinor, rort rraer. or llazellou. liecause of that the Canadian National hae a strong claim oir' Ihe ritrht to build tiie branch line into the Peace country. Who Will Control Road 'When Built? Tjje, question will now arise as to who i to be in control of the new railway, ls il to be an extended P.C.H.? Is it to be a CP.R. road? Is it to be a Canadian National road? It-is claimed that Ihe P.(!.H is not suited for carrying groin as the, grades and corves make it impossible lo operate economi. rally. The C.N.R. on the oilier hand was constructed as a transcontinental line and ha neither sharp curve: or bad. grade-and is-the natural way out for the Peace" River grain. A proposal has been made that the (IP. II. should build the road by extending the one already in operation from Ktlmoiilon and that. running right to Prjnee Rupert should be given of such a nalure a to place the big railway on jiii equal footing with the Canadian National. - From Ibis complicated situation onielhing will have to be worked out. The conflicting iulerels will have lo be dealt with." TtV Us it hardlv seem likely that the Dominion govern ment will bonus the I'.O.K. under' provincial control. It would be much more reasonable to grant a bonus, if one i to be given, either to the Canadian National or the CP.R. a either one of tlioe compapies would build and operate in connection with the larger ystem. No provincial government can go into Ihe railroad business wilh much hope of success. It would be bet? ter to gel one of the bigger companies lo operate the pre.-crij road than (o try to extend the operation of the provincial roan., Supplies i OPERETTA AT BOOTH SCHOOL Excellent Work of Children Closing Event Before Christ mas Holidays murk of Ihe winter nig hi lo Ihe. paid. magic land of faery" where nil wa ridden color.
