The importance of the lumber inliilry to Prince Hnpert is seen by the perusal of the article oi the activities of the local mill published today. It is possible that people of the city do not realize the difficiiltie of marketing lumber from here so as to keep tho yards clear of all grades. For years the mill was. closed beoituse of thai difficulty and if the present concern has solved il, much credit will be due lo them. It is satisfactory to know that the company plans to extend operations and improvements and that it is looking forward In installation of a pulp mill. Entertain Those Who Come Next Week. Next week everyone will be busy tiud especially the merchants of the city.. In spite of this, efforts should be made to entertain visitors from out of town so as to make them feel that Prince Hnpert has a welcome for them. II is difficult lo carry out this to any great extent but wherever possible it might well be, the privilege of citizens to extend their home hospi tality to the many visitors who are lo be in the city. When Prince Rupert people go into Hie interior or lo the Islands it i found thai the people there open wide their doors lo us. 'c are their guests very often and this is an opitorliiuity to return the complimeul; In town we bavej n ratiy activities and- sy muiiy people 'conic at ouceaTi'ut it is! imi6ssihlc, 16 r,eturhr every act or.'lntpllliiTiT) at a time like this but it is well lo bear it in mind and do our best. Very largely it is lonrist business but (here have also been very many visitors to the Portland Canal mining district and they have all stopped off here. The elevator building and other activities of the district have tended lo increase travel so that all (he steamships have been busy and often have had lo.refu-e bookings. Uopresen-latixes of the company will be cumin? to Prince Rupert shortly and .if they are convinced, as a result of their investigations that it would he more profitable for them lo make the boxes here Instead of ship the lumber to New Westminster and make them there the manufacturing will- be done hen". The boxes required for this purpose an 1 1 inches long by 3J inches sipinre. In any case. Mr. Smith expects 'o make big business of box manufacturing here from lower grade lumber produrcd in the mill. Machinery for a box factory has arrived and some of it is set up. With the pressure of other business since Ihe mill ha been in operation, it has not yet been jm-i sitde to put -the lox factory in operation hut il may start and day says Mr. Smith. Il is export ed to make all kinds uf ltoxes hsjrj most of which will probably te shipped to Australia, though the mill will aNo ho in a positin to accomodate Ihe local fish trade It Is Mr. Smith's intention to gradually work into the spruce veneer business and later install aNem-or machine here. Mr. Smith state,! that he had been figuring on the manufactur ing of cans here but nothing had yet been definitely decided upon. Hie idea was. he said, to put cans 1n Ihe boxes made at the mill and sell Uicin to the local salmon canning trade. Large Shipments .
