"" T- SWAM CHANNEL I Story of Effort Made by Colonel Freybero, v.C, Who Got Within 600 Yards of Finish The story of how Colonel Freyberg, V.C., got within less than half a mile of swimming across the English Channel after being nearly seventeen hours in the water has just reached this side in Knglish newspapers. The Colonel had exceedingly hard luck, as he was wtfliin COO yards of the shoiy at the (mint on which stands the Dover Pa-Irol memorial east of St. Margaret's Day, and then experienced a heavy tide 'which was again lakin; him out to sea, and half an hour later, when the .-wim was abandoned, he was a mile off the neare.-t land, which: was the King-down rifle ranges,! The swim is especially notable" from the fact that Colonel Frey-berg was wounded time after, time in the war and carries the scars of over half a dozen wounds. -Swam All Night Starting from Cutc Grisnez, near Houlognc, at 8::Mt on Tuesday night, the Colonel- swam I with great vigour and determi nation throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday. Almost the whole time he was using a left overarm stroke with intervals of change to the breast stroke. He was accompanied on hoard the lug Langdon by bis wife and a party of swimming friends, including Mr. George Currie and Captain Godfrey, of Ihe Dover Swimming Club, and two soldiers belonging to the Folkstone Swimming Club. Mr. Miller, swimming master lo Dover College, was in charge of the small boat and accompanied Colonel Freyberg in the water at' intervals, as did also Mr. Currie and the soldiers. The weather for the firsi few hours was very calm, with a certain amount of haze over the Channel, oooil progress was made hour hy hour, with comparatively small driftage considering ttiat it was the lop of Ihe spring tides. The Colonel drew well out from Cape Grisnez, af- ler which there was some drift for an hour or so till tlie finish of the ebb tide. Then wilh the lurn of the tide wjial drift, there was went to Ihe eastward. ind very fine progress was made across ciiaunei. itie swimmer (idling well up to Ihe Varne lightship (about seven miles off land between Dover and Folkestone) by the time this tide had run out. It was not long after this that Ihe cliffs to Ihe west of Dover were in sight. Boats Came Out When the tug was about two miles off Dover unite n flotilla! of motor boats came out from I ln port with parlies of swimmers, and I bene gave Ihe Colonel hearty cheers as Ihey came alongside him. In one of these boats was Mr. Unwins, the Olympic swimming coach, who hud been training Colonel Frey berg, and as he came alongside Ihe Colonel asked til i t lo come in the sea ami nccoiiipany him for the finish. Mr. Unwins tit once stripped and was nromnt- ily swimming with his pupil, remaining wflii him until Ihe swim .was abandoned about 12:30. I The position seemed most i promising, the swimmer being then wilhin 000 yards of the coast, lnil disappointment was in store, for at this point the tide was sweeping out off Ibnlgames on Wednesday and Thur headland, and, strongly us the Colonel was swimming, he was gradually drifted farther from (be coast until a one o clock the bearings showed the nearest . ft mm ii a hst land to he a mile off. The position was explained lo Colonel Freyberg. and Mr. Miller told him he would have lo swim hard to maintain his position for the ,neit four Ijours, when, with the change of the tide, he would have a chance of swimming in to the shore. Gave Up Colonel Freyberg was advised to give up, .but asked: "Can't I stop in?" Mrs. Freyberg d hi not think her husband should be lowed lo put in this extra four; hours' effort after the long wiih tie had made, and as there was general feeling amongjilinner in Pan-, and by having me accompanying pariy uianiieen heal an. hv Mike .MrTiguein Jhts was Ihe correct view, I liei Colonel decided to rome out.
