"Ate Monday, Dec. 20, 192C WHY THERE IS;NO CANADIAN CLUB. : Why should a strong Canadian .Club not be one of the most important organizations in Prince Rupert? This came up in connection with the 'yi'sit here of Graham Spry, the youthful national secretary from Ottawa of the Canadian Clubs' Association. ' The city is well equipped with service and fraternal organizations whose activities in public and otherwise are widespread and more or less valuable, but the existence of such organizations does not constitute the real underlying reason, however, why a Canadian Cjub does not prosper here. One reason why there are many organizations here all trying to exist and few prospering is that the town is too factional. People are too .prone to criticize and there is a feeling of suspicion or envy of leaders. Everybody wants to be the leader and there is not suf-flcent co-operation in the rank and file. The. result is small and futile cliques. It is not the fault of those who are at the head of such organizations that they do not advance and occupy the high place of respect in the community that they should. If there were a proper community " spirit here, if there were more people who were truly patriotic to .their town, there would- be plenty of good work to be accomplished by a Canadian Club. As long as there is the present feeling of apathy toward things ideal such as the development of a. love of community, nation or Empire; as long as people live in in eery community in mis great uommion.
