Extensive 4 tlej velopments are expected next year In the northern parta of Manitoba. Dr. A, Larose, of The Pas, iitn.. Informed members o( the provincial government at a conference called': to dlscuas -Jv- sources in the northland. The great possibilities with respect to, development of the . resource of the country. Dr. Larose said, were becomlnr. more evident each year and activities of the put few years In mining fields had shown that the district was likely to become one of the most prominent In the worlds Development of the Flln Flon, which had an estimated supply of ore between 300.000.00 and 300,000.000 tons had revealed to the public that there were a great many other claims of at least equal or greater value which were awaiting capital for their development Work had commenced in erection of a smelter on the Flln Flon properties and Premier Bracken had assured, people of The Pas. that upon the results' obtained from the smelter would depend how soon construction work would be started on the railway from Mile Seven on the Hudson Bay Railway to the Flln Flon property. So soon as the mine owners intimated they were ready for the road. the- Premier had said that the government was ready to . proceed with building the road in ae-cordance with legislation at the last legislative sesstcn. ' POWER roSI!HUTIES Of equal Importance Dr. Larose said were the possibilities of power development at Grand Rapids White Mud Falls and Lynx Falls. The White Mud Falls site was capable of being suT3-ciently developed to , supply enough power to electrify the whole Hudson Bay line as soon as it got into opera tion. Power could also be. furnished to the mining fields at a sufficiently low rate to permit operation of all the mining fields. The Doctor has 'lived at The Pas since 1903 when there was little there but mosquitoes in the summer and snow 'in the winter. The only Inhabitants of the district then were Indians. Be Is proud of his adopted town which today, he claims, has as bright a future s any in Canada. In the years he has been in the North he has travelled thousands of miles by boat, canoe and Tail, visiting Indians and white people la out-of-the-way settlements and ministering to then- needs. The Indians In the North live a roving life, he says, hunting, trapping and fishing almost all the year round, la mid-summer they usually gather together to receive their annua treaty money at the appointed places and at Christmas and New Tear they often return t their reservation. . ESKIMOS AND INDIANS Great animosity, be said, existed between Eskimos and Indians. The Eskimos looked down upon the Indians as inferiors. The Indians for their part leering the Eskimos, rarely venture too far North in their wanderings. They could always be found at Fort ChurchlT! during August when the Bay Rupert, the Hudson's Bay company steamer same In - to leave supplies and take away furs. The coming of this ship was a looked for event and the day it entered the great natural harbor at Fort Churchill, was a gala day. Every Indian on th spot, took part in the ,work of loading and unloading, not excepting women and children. It was not unusual for an. Indian woman to carry on her back a load that a white man could hardly lift. ,- Dr. Larose had heard many stories of: tricks the Indians had of getting In their supply of caribou meat In the spring when the ice wis thinning on the lakes and the caribou wrro starting to move, they often got eaugV In the lakes and drowned whU? cross lng the treacherous Ice. Quite often, he said, when the caribou were crossing a lake, the Indian would gather In bands and shoot it the Ice. breaking It so that the carl-1 bou were drowned In large numbers.) Then they would rescue aa many carcasses aa they could, cutting out th tongues and leaving the rest to rot. The tongues were considered a grrat delicacy by the Indiana.
