MEMORIAL FOR "FATHER" HOG AN UIMHMt IN ST. ANDHKWS CATIIED-KAI. DIIIK 'ATtI YKH1F.KUAY The memorial window In St. An. drew', Anglican Cathedral to the late Rev. 'William Hogan, erected by hi Widow and daughter, was dedicated yesterday by Archdeacon O. A. Rlx. It added much to the Interest of the ser vice to have the late Mr. Hogan1 widow present. The daughter, who 1 connected with the Hazelton Hospital, was not able to attend. The window, a beautiful piece of work. Is particularly interesting in design. The late "Father" Hogan hav lng been an Irishman by birth and having maintained a fervent love for the land of his nativity. It was tTumgbt that a window typical of that Island would be appropriate and the result produced Is both beautiful and suggestive of Ireland. The central figure Is St, Patrick with his pastoral itaff and Bible. On hi feet are portrayed the shamrock, and the serpent, the latter of which, tradition says. St Patrick banished from the land. At the right Is illustrated the famous Celtic Round Tower, one of the two most typical things In Irish history going back even i to the prehistoric tunes. On the left Is depicted the other most typical emblem 1' of Irish life, the ancient harp which was carried by the bards who went I throughout the country carrying news j and Inspiring the people with their lays as they chose or were Instructed to do, At the top of the window 1 the follow ing text: "Ye (hall die like men and (all Uke one of the princes." At th! base Is the inscription: "To the glory of Ood and In loving memory of Rev William Hogan. Born, September 4, 1831. at Clefden County. Oalway, Ire land. Died. February 1. 1S14, at Mas-sett. Queen Charlotte Islands, BC. Or ialned. August. 1893.. missionary in the diocese ot Csledonla 'for twenty-one years." The late William Hogan was a typical Irishman of the finest type with a fine physique, big heart, enthusiastic spirit and devoted soul. His father and grandfather were both distinguished members of the famous Irish Constabulary and he himself desired to enter the Army but later determined to go as s missionary and, after a few years as principal of a Dublin school, be and his young wife come to the northern coast of British Columbia In 1893 under the direction of the Church Missionary talety of England. His field of service arss at MetlakaUa. Port Essington, Port Simpson and Massett at the last mentioned of which places he died beloved by all who knew him. both natives nd whites. He left his impression for good upon the whole northern cos region and will always be remembered as one of these who assisted In Uyln; the foundations for righteousness in this district. tWKr.U.
