DAILY BDITIOR $7.'f Friday, April 1(5, 1926. Tax Reductions Will Prove Welcome. The tax reductions announced yesterday will prove very welcome to-many Prince Rupert people. The reduction of the sale's tax, the receipt lax, the reduction in the postage rates mid the income tax changes all will lighten the' load that has proved heavy since the war and whs directly the result of wartime expenditure. It is to be hoped the government is not going loo, fast in its tax reductions and that the future will justify its actions. At any rale we shall enjoy the change. Optimistic Outlook Of . .Finance Minister. Apparently Hon. J. A. RoM is an optimist. And he -is the one man in Canada who should be in a. position to know w:iiether his optimism is justified. He is m touch, or his department is, with all the activities or the nation rrom coast to coast. He says lie expects to pay off twenty-one million dollars' worth of the Canadian debt even after reducing the taxes as staled in the despatches. If he does that, it is the. best possible proof' that the howl of, bad times put up at the last election was just apolitical howl. The results !eem lo have provvd it. . Irishman. It is a treat to hear the representative of the mjuUi of Ire-laud speaking in that strain. II is an indication that at last the' Irish question is settled. The pitv is that many years ago in the time oT Gladstone the British people had not been wise .enough to have .'followed the policy laid down by him which would have prevented much bloodshed, hate,' worry, hardship and annoyance. . . -. ' Financial Market "..' . Suffering Badly. - - Whatever may be the cause.'it Is certain thatithe-financial wo.rld is in a turmoil and Hint securities are being very much depressed in the market. Possibly it may be the result of stock gamblers manipulations or there may be a more- deep-seated reason for it. At any rale it will be interesting lo watch Hie changes. The most outstanding 'of tbesp are recorded in despatches to this paper. ' -r ' Island Activity Seems Certain. ,v II seems certain from information received from the 'Queen Charlotte Islands that there will le Kceater activity there. than has been the case for many years past. The de.veIopmcnt,of the fisheries at that point is being carried to a point exceeding oil previous errorts in that line awvthcre seem to be indication that lumberng will again be active there soon.
