The Board or Trade, sole representative body for the business interests of Prince Rupert, win either make op break tin-city. It has great deal (if influence with people outside. When nn opinion is being nked a to the attitude of local business people, it is Jhe Board of Trade that is consulted. Should people' require information as to the possibilities of locating here in business or' profession, they inquire from the Board. The secretary is a 1usy nvaii, who answers hundreds of letters and tries fo direr! people, aright, lie is paid by the members from money subscribed by them. The annual donation of the city is devoted to publicity or the entertainment or distinguished visitors. In addition to subscribing twelve dollars a year for the privilege of .working" for the city, members of the Board attend meetings and members of the executive council give a great deal or time often to forwarding what they believe to be the interests of Prince Rupert and district. This is mentioned because it seems lo be a popular thing to jeer at the work or the Board. The members could do much more than they do, but it must be remembered they already do a great deal aiid they do it not only without remuneration tin! they pay for the privilege of being allowed to work. Now that the new year has begun under new officers and with a new outlook, it is to be hoped that the people of the city will rally to the board and those who are not already members will take the first opportunity of joining. Non-Members Ask But Why Do They Not Join? Mostly it is the non-membej; who are always asking why docs not the Board of Trade take some particular line of action. They are the people on the sidelines who, not able or willing to do anything themselves are always ready to tell others how to do it. To thee we suggest that they get inside the Board, pay their fees like men and then have their sny at the monthlj meetings. Something More Than . ."'"' Personal Preference. ' The civic elections take place thi week and it will be well Tor voters to think twice before casting their ballots. It will be well to discard fiersonal preferences arid try to look at the candidates purely from the point of view of public welfare. Let ns ask ourselves not which man do we like best? but which man will best serve the city and uphold her prestige in the fore of the outside world? The coming year may be n very important one. It may be that hie onestions will arise which have to he settled. Great progress is expected. The choice of mayor and council means much In us a!!, therefore let us be wise. Edmonton View Of Peace River. Despite the much talked of exodu. not all the homesleaderH have left the Peace River district, "says the Edmonton Bulletin. I'p lo the end of the year more than a million ami a quarter bushels of wheat and a half million bushels of other grain have come in over the E.D. and B.C. Railway. There is a steady ex port of cattle and hogs, which at some seasons has been remarkable, and shipments or dairy produce and ponltry make up a total which Irespeaks ulike the fertility of tho rotinlrv and the presence of n large number of-industrious, thrirty mid enterprising farmers and farm families. While there has been no radical change in the trnn-pnrta tion facilities, the effect of the McKeown-Oliver freiphl rates Order has been more fell, by the Peace River farmers than by those in other parts of Alberta. It is the farmer farthest from market, ; rtnd whose products carry the heaviest charges, who igrls the most needed benefit from a reduction in freight rates Those it ytjhe Peace' Riir district who found it possible and desirable to "slick" even ' mfder former conditions . will have been encouraged by the reduction in marketing charges to stay on their land and increase their operations.
