II. P. PULLEN, Managing Editor. Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations. DAILY EDITION Saturday, January 0, 19i't'. Plenty Of Good News Yesterday. - There was plenty or good news here yesterday. Perhaps the most important was the .aunouiiremciit thai in two weeks work would commence on the erection of a new shingle and lumber mill at this port. Already much or the machinery is here and the work will be under way just as soon as the coin-pany is ineorporateiir The loss of the big mill was a serious one and while the small mill will not replace the other, it will help to fill the gap caused by the big fire. It is In lie erected alongside the burned-over ' area. Must Be Another Mill In North Soon. 11 understood that the pulp limits held by the -Print"? Rupert Spruce Mills' Ltd. are held at the specially low pulp rate conditional on a pulp mill being erected in the neighborhood within' a short lime. Thai woidd eem to indicate that a mill must be built or the limits revert to ordinary timber limits and the higher'rafc be paid. So far these limits have not been touched. They are situated in the neighborhood of the Khul-zamateen River and are said lo carry a lot of good pulp and lumber timber. Cannery Development On Queen Charlottes. The cannery development on Ihe Queen Charlotte Islands had been forecasted in these columns on more than one occasion. A dispatch from Skidi'gale before Ihe holidays told of one of the new canneries to be built. It i excellent news that there is lo be general activity on Ihe Islands, all of which will tend to make this place busy. The. interests of the Queen Charlottes and Prince Rupert are one. Anything we can do to help them should not be omitted. If. they make progress, we shall natur ally benefit Whilt; Vancouver will alj benefit v and . o will oilier places, wc'inusf, owfugfto our plfdtinii, ieSpysomT of Ihe reward of the industry of the Islanders. Just now this good news was needed to cheer up the local people who were feeling ralher downcast at the loss gf the mill and at the failure so far of any shipments ol grain to head this way. The difficulty with us is that it take very lillle to depress us. We see blue ruin ahead when there is really no reason lo be downcast. Speech From Throne Looks Like Business. The speech from the throne al Ihe opening of Parliament yesterday mentions a number of activities that will prove interesting to Canadian generally. On thp whole it may be said lo show Ihe influence of Ihe fanners on Ihe Government.. Yet it has much with which all will agree. We all agree that taxes should be as low as possible. We all agree thai the land should be settled and brought under cultivation a quickly a-" possible. We want the tariff as low as possible. We all in the West woidd like to see grain flowing through Canadian ports instead of through American. ' We may not be in agreement with the building of iTie Hudson's 1 Bay Railway, because many of us consider it a useless expenditure at the present time, bin, as we Jiave often -mentioned, government has to be a matter of com promise. We cannot nil agree with Ihe whole policy of a gov ernment. What we have lo, consider is which group i mot favorable to the district in which we reside. If in a group of legislative proposals there i but one lo which we can lake ex ception, we have to consider ourselves fortunate. Peace River Is - , Not Mentioned.; SmIo; as t)te first brief telegraphic report is concerned, the're is no meiilio'n .of Pe,ace River development. It would sCemito- us as if the development of the Peace River country was of more importance. o Canada' than the completion of the'lfud- soif Hv railwav. The comliihe.il rail jand boat Tale gixes southern farmers an advuiilncc of about $2,00 per ton. Again the interior has suffered through, the (quietness of. the timber market Should wheat slarl . inovinir through here to the Orient, -there is every reason lo believe,-' " that we would again start slilppint hemlock to .lapan, as the demand for thai lumber is 20 per cent, of Jitpan's total imports. This would greatly benefit the Skeena Valley. Silk Trade This year the Canadian Na tional Railways made arranpe-nienls'wi.'h the Blue i-'unnel line. whereby Ihe latter company s landins Sis silk at Vancouver instead of at Seattle as in Ihe pas.. It has always been the hopes of this board, that this was the company that would iiliiiiiaieiy make Ibis Jhcir first purl of call from the Orient, particularly as their boats are not as fast as other competitive lines, and it lias been our opinion Dial the 180 miles saving in water haul would be an attraction that would offset any advantage that other ports might have by reason of their larger population. II is hoped that the manage ment of the (i.N.H. will eventually have the road bed between here and Jasper in a condition ilia: will allow the running of -trains it a speed equal to if not greater than is pnsihle for their trains from Vanrouxer to attain. When. they reach thai stale of efficiency, I have no doubt but what the majority of silk and other highly valuable commodities from the Orient will move by the. port of Prince Huperl. Co-operate on Qraln I is indeed gratifying to nolo that with the completion of th elevator, the huildin? of which I his board peristently advocated. Prince Hupert is now in a posi tion lo handle Ihe oul-ctios and in-eomiiif of all commodities ex- rtorled or imported by u. It remains now for the fiovernnient. the and the oMizcns ol Prince Hupert to co-operale in an elfort lo have a eniilinu.il flow of 'grain pa ing throuvh thi elevator to ship destined for thoe countrie which are importer of grain, as well as inaking'tliis the principal port of Ihe Pacific for Ihe export of salmon. Without being: a hit pe.i mistic I cannot refrain from al this time impressing upon Ihe cili.ens of Prince Hupert that wa have in Ihe city of Vaifcmiver a very powerful rival whose posi tion is very greatly enhanced by the fact -that it has been a grain exporting port for the past four years. Grain arid ship broker representing practically all the buyers and sellers of wheal, as well a the agenls for all ships in the wheal earryinp trade have (heir offices at Vancouver, there fore they largely control the ex port trade of this coast, and as Vancouver is their home they naturally exercise all their ef .... . . ions to nave me. wheal pa through that port. As an instanrs of Ihe means lliat they- are pin oared to lake, piobtaln' IheieTt ends, we fearri f nun their papers!! that the Merchants Kxchaiote ha. broadcasted a half a cent i. bushel premium as a freight rale, from Prince Hupert h over thai from Vancouver. It Is possible that some carrier may demand that as a premium, but it is equally true that the C.G.M.M. ha optioned ships for Prince 'Huperl or Vancouver loading al equal rales. This-mul have been nown by the I'xehangc yi;t evidently to serve their own ends I hey failed to give this to the press. Valuable Member Lost II Is with 'regret that I report thai during the year, W.
