D&EPKenny DENTIST Exchange Blook MADE TO CITY roi l.l OIITAIN OPERATION or llllY HOCK PLANT rilOVIDKII DOCK (JOT CERTAIN TEKMH A proposition that the city take over the dry dock power house and operate It for the next five years with no remuneration to the dry dock other thai. allowing It the same power rate as the elevator enjoys was submitted to tb city council at a special meeting last nlht by Thomas Louden, manager of the plant. The council was In sesstoi, for two hours to consider the proposl tlon and there was considerable d In clusion which resulted in no decision being reached other than to request Mr, Louden to put the'matter formally bo- fore the city In writing. Certain members of the council an. J. J. Little, superintendent of utilities, were Inclined to favor acceptance of the proposal aa a means to ensure powjr supply for Immediate needs without go ing to the expense of building a .new triant or enlarging the present one which, without the elevator, would be working to capacity during the cominj winter. It was pointed out, however, that the dry dock- plant would have to te changed from coal to oil burning. Other aldermen were critical of the proposition and felt that the operatlou cf the dry dock plant by the city would be a losing business. It would cost more to produce the power at the drv dock than the city would get for It. Those present at the meeting were. Mr. Louden; O. A. McMillan, dry dock superintendent and A. E. Bazett-Joneis powerhouse engineer In charge: J. J. Little, superintendent of Utilities, am all members of the council except Aid. Casey. Larsen and Aid. McKechnle. OBJECTION TAKEN TO INCREASED TARIFF ON WHEAT AT VANCOUVER ITotfM Made by Cilinontuii Hoard Trade to Chairman of drain Comnillonrr of EDMONTON, Sept. 28. Strong sup port of the Alberta provincial govern meat's action In protesting the Van' couver Harbor Board's application to th Board of Oraln Commissioners fof &b increase In tariff charges In handltnn aew grain, haa been forwarded by wire to Leslie Boyd of Fort William, chalt The grounds of protest are that no evidence as been yet presented Jus tllvlng the proposed Increase. The Beard of Trade further requestes that such an Increase be withheld atil until iull evidence Is submitted showing the necessity for such Increase and an opportunity Is afforded by hearing of the grain board In Edmonton so that the Bosrd of Trade and producers of the province may make the desired representations following the submission of such evidence. Claim is made that the present volume of grain on the Western route will be called upon to pay for new elevators and facilities at the port of Vancouver designed to handle a much greater volume. The Alberta government Is heartily In favor of the Western route, but does not think costs at Fort William have anything to do with Vancouver as the two grain ports have little In common for comparison, and objects to tariff at the coast being based on Fort William costs. "Terminal facilities should be developed ahend of the trade and In advance of the actual demand," Insists the gov- I eminent, "but It is not difficult to maintain this condition when It Is possible to provide a new unli in from six months to a year."
