J NOT tto IMTEWIOPT J; IT AG A IN) ( WfTt. TO TELL Vc . Httr HIS APPOINTMENT AS CANADA'S KE-PRESENTATIVU THE OPfuv AT WASHINGTON TERE IS ON, p Re WAS HAPPY The Spectator, London, recently published a letter to the editor: May I be 'allowed as an old friend and a warm admirer of Vincent Mousey to cay something about him and hla new appointment to the readers of the Spectator? lie deserts their close attention, as a patriotic Canadian, as an Imperialist of the best type, as a believer In a permanent understanding between all who speak the English tongue, as anl adrocate ,of the University spirit, as a potent element In social and, political life, and finally as one who deserves the poignant. If old-fashioned, description of "a scholar and a gentleman." tilt appointment by Mackenzie King, th new Canadian Prime Minister, to be the diplomatic representative of the Dominion at Washington Is a happy event. Judged not only by the personality and record of the man appointed, but also as being a new departure In the development of the British Commonwealth of Nations. It signalizes, not a weakening, but a strengthening of the ties that bind the nations of the Empire. That Vincent Massey will exercise an Important Influence In Washington cannot be doubted, and exercise it without In the least Impairing the position of the British Ambassador. The American people as a whole will find In Mr. Massey as strong an adherent as they are of , the University spirit. Mr. Massey's father, working through hla son, en- lng In the British Empire with a notable feature In Hart House. Hart House Is an institution halfway between a "Union such as we know at Oxford and That the business people of Ketchikan differ with the salmon fishermen on the question of whether or not there should be fish traps Is Indicated in the following editorial from the Ketchikan Chronicle: Dan Sutherland has been delegate to congress for six years. He want to go there for another two years, to draw down some thirty odd thousands .of dollars mors. To bring about his election' he tells the fishermen he is against flshtraps, that he wants them abolished. He has told them that for six years and if elected he would tell that two years from now. In this, he Is either incapable or In sincere. If he wants the flshtrap abolished, why has he not had them . wlfwd, out? The answer is that he hai ' not been able' to do so, or that he 1 Insincere In his statement that he Is working to that end. Privately he Is known to know that the flshtrap can not be abolished any more than the Iron chink, the power boat or the lino type machine. But he uses this argu ment as vote bait. There is as much sense in advocating the abolition of the flshtrap as there la against advocating a law against j more gas engines for boats. The wiping out of the trap would mean more seiners, it Is said. Likewise, the wiping out of the gas engine would mean more row boats. But progress does not turn backward. Dan will tell the fishermen he Is going to wipe out the flshtrap, but he isn't,. He isn't even going to try very hard. Any move of his In that direction will be a mere gesture, for catching votes, The same Is true of Wllllma L. Paul, who has been In the legislature a counle of terms and who has Dromlsed his native tribesmen that he woiila wipe but the traps. He will not wipe them out. He knows1 It, and he know that If he did there would be little fish packed and consequently no money for, schools. Ketchikan alone gets money from some seven or eight canneries to help pay expenses and then from the Territorial treasury which gets practlc ally all of Its money from the fisheries It gets some 75 per cent Of the cost ot Its schools. The Paul ticket today, Including Sutherland, stands for giving every aged native In the country a pension, This will mean that the schools must suffer and that the olil-tlr. ;r must suffer. The Sutherland-Paul ticket stands for 1 g"" - 1926 Int i Furvm Soviet: .Ue nothing except turning the Territory-back to the natives. Odd Kinks in and Around New York Alaska. ' Thus all the omens seem favorable. That Mr. Massey will have a prosperous tenure of office at Washington and set a good tradition is the hope and sure belief of all his friends. He certainly will deserve success. No more can be said of any man. J. ST. L. 8. If it Is true, as the psychologists declare, that thn average person would rather descend than ascend stairs, the prosperity of New York's hundreds of basement shops might be accounted for Offering their wares a few steps below the level of the sidewalk, they tantalize the purse strings to unloosen foi everything from tea to tambourines. Reminding the New Torker of the thousands of strangers in the city dally. Is the constancy with which he is assailed by visitors seeking directions. 1 ' The usual advice given such strangers Is: "If you want concise directions. I dont ask a native; ask someone who's been here only a few months. He probably knows the ropes better than a native son." And that leads to another phase of the problem of getting about the big city. Many a stranger, spotted as such by the sharp cab driver he appeals to. finds his cab fare double what it normally would "be after the cabby has circled the named destination, declar lng that he never heard Of. or had to go to that place before. Echoes of the recent heavyweight championship bout at Philadelphia can be. heard yet in New York.
