The third annual Convention of the Omlneca Teachers' Institute was held In . Smlthers last Friday and Saturday and -proved to' he the most successful of any yet held. Twenty-six teachers were present at the business meetings held In high school on Friday, representing a section ol Central B.C. of over three hundred miles along the line of the C.N. Railway from Dorreen on the west to Fort Fra-ser on the east. In the district represented there are over fifty teachers but. In a number of instances It meant closing the schools for two days to allow the teachers to attend and this could not very well be done. School Inspector H. C. Fraser of Prince Rupert was the principal speaker at the convention and gave two addresses. At the morning session he spoke on preparing scholars for entrance examinations and gave the teachers many valuable hints on the subject. At the afternoon session, "Intelligence Tests" and "Achievement Tests" Were his main topics, and as these are comparatively new ideas In present day education his remarks were followed very closely. OBJECTIVE FAAMIXATlOy It was pointed out that In the past, school examinations have been of a subjective nature, that Is, the pupil was called upon to write essays and competitions to supply answers to the various questions, and the marks given for the papers could vary to a considerable extent according to the temprc-ment of the examiner reading the papers. In comparison to this are the objective examinations, which consist of a number of statements which arc neiiiAMvl VT (So rtiinll tiri V nnn isiH either 'true" or "false" thus saving considerable time for the examiner and assuring the same markings, irrespective of who Is doing the examining. This latter method Is now gradually taking the place of the former In British Columbia public school examinations, MAKING HISTORY Principal Cockrane of Burns Lake spoke on "Making History Interesting ' dealing with history for the tntermedl ate grades. R. B. Wallace of the Smlthers school gave an Interesting address on "The Making of a Newspaper," and dealt with newspaper work from the time the news comes In to the - Editor to the -time the paper ownes-oi the press. To assist In his explanations Mr; Wallace had on hand a number of articles from one of the large dailies. - Discussions on these and other subjects were freely participated In by the teachers and it was evident that much assistance and benefits have been gained by teachers as a result of the Convention: "Selections of officers for the next term resulted as follows: President Principal V. It. Crockett. (Smlthers). Pice President F. Randal (Smlthers). and Principal Cockran (Burns Lake) were re-elected, with the following executive: Mrs. J. P. Wheeler (Telkwa), O. O. Harris (Topley), and Miss Isabel Richardson (New Hazelton). To Illustrate the growth of Central B.C. li' Is Interesting to compare the number of teachers now needed, to only five that were required ten years ago. ENTERTAINMENT The entertainment side of the Convention was as successful as the bust- ' ncAs part, chief of Which was a big dance held In the town hall on Friday eight , and. which was voted one of the most pleasant affairs of the season. It had been planned to take the visiting teachers on -a motor trip to the Duthle mine but as the weather on Saturday afternoon was not suitable for this, basketball games were held Instead. The games were played in the Town Hall and were greatly enjoyed. Th first game between the ladles was won by the town team 10 to 2, with the teams as follows: Visiting teachers Misses McRea, Richardson, Smith, Tlttemore, Christen sen and McLean. Town ladles Misses Roberts, Bowes, Mclntyre and Durham and Mrs. Mc Intyre and Mrs. Manuel. The town men were also successful in their game with the mei teachers by a score of 29 to 27.
