"We who live in Canada have much to be thankful lor. we have reason to be proud of the past ( and to be confident of our future, pur present problems, In the light of the passing years will pro've to be small ones after all, just as those of the past appear to have been now. Our position in the world is an honorable one. We stand high among the nations enjoying their respect and their confidence and in that great commonwealth which forms the British Empire we stand first. In my mind Canada is today the best economic bet of any country on the face of the earth.'' In these words Sir Henry W. Thornton, chairman and president of tho Canadian National Railways epitomized his thoughts on the present and future status of Canada in a thanksgiving address to the Canadian Club of Victoria at noon today. LVKXTS l'KOVE IT Sir Henry who was introduced by the president of the club, as the super-optimist of the Dominion, acknowledged the charge with "fclmost criminal cheerfulness," but he, stated that he thought that the events :of the past few years and the steady progress which Canada has been making, more than justified his highest expressions of . faith In the country. Had I not had unllmttcd faith In .the future of Canada-and in the ability of the Canadian Not.inhal Rallwav tn hi. come an issue 01 great value to tne pea-pie of the Dominion, I never would" have accepted the position which I now occu-, py and had I found my faith unfounded I would not have remained," he said. s In dealing specifically with the position of British Columbia Sir Henry said he .looked forward with a great des.1 el confidence to the future of the province. It is a matter on which the people of the province could be complimented thai they had been able to make such excellent progress In the past few years and he believed that a continued application of the same industry, nil, and csnfldence In the conduct of their affairs would make British Columbia th? most Important section of the whole Pacific slope. VANCOUVER HEAT TUISCO He cited as an example of what had already been accomplished, the fa;t I that last year the port of Vancouver handled a greater tonnage than 8au $8.00 a month Only $2.00 a Week Givc3 you immediate possession to either Lot 3, Block 37, Sec. 5 or Lot 16, Block 27, Sec. 6 or Lot 9, Block 29, Sec. 6 You'll make no mistake in buying one of these lots, as . they are well located jiear McBride Street. The natural resource, the climate, the labor situation and the healthy outlook of the people, he thought accentuated Wis growing superiority and result In a period of sound and progressive prosperity for the whole cf the province and from it the people of Canada as a whole would also profit. In closing his remarks. Sir Henry complimented the Canadian clubs of the Dominion upon the work they are accomplishing in teaching men and women to think, talk and act nationally and he thought that the efforts of the Canadian clubs vtould da much to prevent the growth of sectionalism which ht dt-crlbes as a danger which must "always threaten a nation as far flung and of so many different Interests' as Canada. He also took occasion to express the thought that the establishment of tie nevr Dominion board of trade was a big step In the right direction and to promise to It the loyal support and sympathetic Interest of himself and the Canadian National Railways.
