Willi the priicticully complete destruction of the Prince Rupert .Spruce. Mill at Seal Cove in yesterday morning's lire, the second lisulrous blaze to visit the place within two mouths' lime, will probably disappear any poibility of the plant being rebuilt ulpug its furoier lines. This does mil necessarily mean, however, that there will bo no rebuilding by Mr. Sini'h or possibly other interests. Large limber holdings go with the Prince Rupert 'Spruce Mill and it Jius been a ipieslion ever since (he mill -was Infill if they could be used to besl advantage by straight sawmilliug operations. The next move along the line of the timber industry in Prince Rupert will probably be the fonuda-tion of a pulp and paper industry, an objective that Mr. Smith hiniself had in view since he acquired the local plant about a year ago. Local people naturally bemoan the loss of the sawmill but out of its aslies may yet rise Prince Rupert' greatest s.iugle industrial plan!. , '.Citizens of Prince Rupert generally will sympathize with Mr. Smith in his troubles. U is a well knuwu Tact thai the first fire proved a great shock to him with the result that since it occurred he has lain ill at his home, in San Francisco. The business like way in which Mr. Smith took hold of the local Miwiuill and put. it .011 a stable productive basis caused confi-'dence lo be inspired in him ami 'it will be a matter for general regret if ihesexvVfiascos result in him relinquishing: his interests here. Breaking out in the dead of night a it did and in a hmi that, was not showing at the time a vestige of activity, circumstances surrounding the second fire al llie mijl are of a nature that could well bear investigation. There eem some fntinda- turn lo the belief that a "fire bug" or spile worker might have 'been at the bollom of it. ills iq be expected that the maMer will be fully probed and it is lo be hoped that any nefarious work there might have been will be brought to light. Railway Report Is Gratifying One. According to the report of V. A. Kiugsland, general manager of Weslej-n Lines, the Canadian National Railways from Ihe Great Lakes-west lo the Pacific Coast have made good healthy pnjgress during 1025 cpmmensurale with the sm-ce-s thai ha'-, been achieved during the past three years by Sir Hemy Thorn-.ton and his abfjj ru'uleunii.ls. 11 now looks as if the good work ,vtfl continue' and that the system may mioii be lifted from it' position as a burden on the Canadian taxpayer. There have been a lot of innovations nvide at considerable expense by the CN.R. during the past year to make the line more atlraclive" and comfortable for the (ravelling public. R. spile or these, the finances are said to lip in a very healthy position. This re fl eels good management and it is to be hoped that Ihe regular business such or the handling of freight, etc.. is being haudled'ni a like manner. That the roadbed should be kept in good order is another mailer thai is equally imporbtnl. It is no use. .attracting and obtaining business if it cannot be handled. No doubt (his aspect is also receiving due attention. In connection. with Mr. Kingsland's report, it is particularly gratifying to know that the line making Prince Rupert its terminus, through lourisl business and fish handling particularly, has contributed to the general success. It is to be hoped (hat the grain movement through Prince Rupert will have proven another important Taclor before it comes time to iaue the annual report, un railway operation a year from now.
