Ever Before. lfrince Hupert has better gardens and more of them than ever before, and each year should see an increase in the number. While- it .cannot be said that gardening is as easy here as in the south, it is productive of. good results if engaged in with good judgment and persistency. In the' first place a gardener here must not expect to raise everything just the same here as in -Victoria, foin'slance. Conditions are different. Roses of the hardier varieties should be chosen and, .so should a great many other flowers. My careful propagation, however, it will be found that very good showings can be made. Making A Lawn Is - - i Matter of-Mowing. Making a lawn is very largely a matter of persistent use of the lawn mower. Take a piece of fairly dry muskeg and ue the lawn mower on it and in a few years there will be a lawn. It is to be expected that ."a. great many people will lake exception' to this statement. They will tell what difficult work it was for them to get their lawns. Of course the correct thing is to thoroughly dig and fertilize the land and sow plentv or seed. No other method will get as good results. The difficulty is Jhal a. great many people IhbikHhat- will producea lawir whereas il is the niowing that brings the results. If a lawn is cut two or three times a week aj this time of year it will soon look like velvet. Rolling helps and so does fertilizing but the one thing necessary anove cverytning else is persistent use or the lawn mower. City Never Looked ' -Better Than Today. Prince Rupert never loOkefMirighier? and more prosperous than it does today. The buildings with a few exceptions have been painted and give a visitor tire ideajlhat the residents are awake anuon the job. The windows of the shops look' "bright aiid are well decorated. Some of the merchants here lake iv lot of trouble with their shop windows and use them wholly for display of it heir goods. Others stick cards nod foreign ndver-! Using inciter ju their windows hndrthen exueVt lo sell their goods. ' Pulling a card advertisementin the window spoils the Whole effect just as a sluffer spoils the effect of a letter. It is impossible to do two thiiigsat once. ..A merchant cannot advertise his own goods atid some other at the same time with any chance, of.fuccess. A bright window card absorbs the attention of (he passer and the goods are not noticed. The wise merchant is he who devotes a lot of lime to hi window, for it is the best advertising be can get. It ranks just ahead of newspaper advertising.
