The fruit crop of the Dominion during 1825 was very abundant, In fact, so much o in the case of perishable fruits, that the grower was unable to dispose of all his crops. In spite of the fact that Canada, ap pears to be confronted with extreme difficulties In the matters of small lstlon, heavy indebtedness, burdensome taxation and 6evere competition In trade, the wealth of natural resources with which we are endowed places us In a really remarkable and encouraging position. There Is no Justification for peslmlsm and it Is the duty of every business and public man to preach pros Jjerlty. Tne district generally Is progressing. The farmers of the interior now have a more contented feeling. The building and operating of the grain elevator at Prince Rupert has given them assurance that the grains they produce will be taken care of and has resulted in a much greater acreage of grain being grown. Another agricultural industry that has considerably developed during the last year Is the production of timothy seed. Conditions for this industry are ideal In the Bulkley Valley. The Department of Agriculture, realizing this, Installed power seed cleaning plants at Smlthers, Barrett and Burns Lake. These have proven of invaluable assistance to the settlers. During 1925, only 45 tons of seed were shipped while, during 1928, 275 tons have been shipped. The farmer receives 8 cents per pound for this product f.o.b. point of shipment and clear of all expense such as sacking. SEED .SUCCESSES The seed from this district has won signal success wherever exhibited. At the International Seed Show held In Chicago, It won four prizes Including the distinction of having won the first prize In addition to sixth, eighth, and ninth prizes. Many others have been won at Victoria and local points for both grain 1 end grass seeds. The Industry Is being prosecuted on strictly business lines as the farmers hay or; ma au Avvu must be shipped through the association. . The establishment of an abattoir in Prince Rupert Is another valuable asset to our farmers. Cattle may now be shipped regularly and In good condition and sold at a fair market price, whereas formerly they were all shipped at about one time in the fall, thereby creating a slump on the market and consequent low prices to the farmer. The output of dairy products is also steadily Increasing. An Impetus had been given this by the reduction in express rates on cream as a result of the sitting of the Board of Railway Commissioners arranged by this Board of Trade at Prince Rupert during the summer, when this matter and the injustice of the then existing rates were forcibly put before them. The commission visited at bmlthers and, as a result, other reductions In freight rates have been made to the advantage of the farmer, especially that on timothy seed while In transit' to cleaning stations. The officials of the Canadian National Railway have heartily co-operated with the farmers during the last year and the aggressive assistance of Duncan Muaro. the commissioner for the Land Settlement Board, has been of Invaluable benefit to the district The development of our farms In the Interior 1 of vital interest to Prince Rupert. If they progress, our city.' benefit. The farmers of Central British Columbia .are attaining every effort to make W ; successful i arming country and it behove every person In Prtnce Rupert to extend to them all possible support. TI.MItEK IMH'KTKY Our timber Industry and forest prot ducts have hac" a satisfactory year. Con stderlng that the lumber market the world over has been dull, we have held our own in spite of adverse trade con ditions. The destruction by fire of the mill at fieal Cove and the Canadian Product Mill at Usk have been serious blows to our output of manufactured materials' but these losses have been offset to a great extent by the re-openlng of the mill at Port Clements and also the re-aumptlon of operations at Lakelse Mills, AmeHbury, and the opening of the local, industry at Seal Cove for the manufacture of shingles and cedar lumber. Steps are nbw being taken to rebuild the two mills destroyed by fire. The mills at Queen Charlotte City and Georgetown have a usual tun continuously during the whole year. The prospect for this industry is bright In view of the fact that many grain vessels will be lined here creating an opportunity for the disposal of materials for that purpose and also an opportunity to export direct lo trie world' market. minimi orrrt't The mining output for 1928 in this district has been a record one. The . northwest portion of BC. has, diving the year, produced in value twelve mil' lion dollar worth of materials prlncl pally gold, silver, copper and lesser quftn- J titles of lead and sine. Out of thl money, 110,400,000. has been left In Jlrltlth Columbia In the form of wage and supplies and one third of the dividend has been paldto B.C. shareholders. Prospecting for miner! ha also been vigorously prosecuted during 1920, and more and better discoveries have been made than In any previous year. Devel- ; opment on claims has been extensive : resisting in the expenditure of over a I .quarter of a million dollars, besides the j development work done by the large pro- j dudng companies. 1 The outlook for this Industry Is very I bright and in the near future it should j experience great expansion. SATISFACTORY FISHING Our fishing Industry has had a very satisfactory year while the halibut 1 atch. the fish most directly concerning ,?rinc Rupert, was about a million pounds less than 1925. It real I red 800.- 000 more on account of higher prices prevailing. The fishing industry as a whole m District No. 2 showed a substantial In crease over last year. The total value of fish caught was over nine million dollars as compared with four millions in 1925. : Our fishermen residents have made ; out well, and a more contented spirit j is manifest among them than during i 1925. Shipping out of our port is now beginning to assume proportions, but ssmmenccd too late in 1926 to make a very appreciable Increase In tonnage during that year. The year 1927 should The year 1920 was very satisfactory however. The customs revenue In creased almost 6000 over 1925 or about 20 per cen, and 173 more vessels entered and cleared In and out of our port, seven of these were grain vessels which loaded a total of about two million bushels of wheat.
