Mr. Brady expressed pleasure at the progress that had bean described In the repcrt of the president for 192G. As a result of his trip East. Mr. Brady said, he had been seized with the conviction that Prince Rupert was Indeed a place worth living In. He found one ad verse condition, however, and that was that there was not the community spirit among the people as a whole. He could see no reason why men, even though they differed politically and religiously, should not combine tmn to man when the future success and development of their city and district was at stake. While he joined the Board of Trade In a spirit or optimism, he would point out that sentiment played a small part In the commercial world and. no matter how much the people might dream of progress, nothing would be achieved If the port could not compete with others on equal terms. No stone should be left unturned bv a unltiii Prince Rupert to put Itself on an equal basis with Its great rival. Van couvcr. Now that the now of grain had i started It was necessary to hold It. There was no part cf Canada and few parts of the British Empire that had such great possibilities as this district and he believed that 1927 should go down in history as a year of progress marked as the beginning of an era of great success and advancement. Robertson, Manager Brady expressed his belief that obstacles were put in the road of the people here for them to overcome. Only with united e.'fort could such things as this be conquered. After Mr. Brady had concluded. E. C. Gibbons said that he felt It his duty to challenge the statement madV by him that the Board of Trade did not irtjoy the confidence of the people. He must have been badly Informed. Mr. Brady would find as time went on. Mr. Gibbons said, that there would always be people sitting on the side lines doing nothing but criticizing everything that anybody else might do. Mr. Brady said be had net been expressing his own personal opinion but mentioned It only as a belief that had been brought home to him. In what he had said, he had no desire to reflect on any member of the board. He would be only too pleased to aid In aiwSWag such an impression as this on the part of the public. GOOD WORK LABOR BUREAU naiKli 531 MES IX I'KKMAXKNT EMPLOYMENT LAMT Y KA It, OTIIKK STATISTICS The local brancA of the Employment Service of Canada under the superin tendence of J. M. Campbell, was res ponsible for placing 591 men last year In regular poslUqn and providing 4.56 men with caruaT labor according to figures given out -today. The year, on the whole, campared favorably with the previous one and this winter there hss been a greater demand for men due to activity at the . elevator and the dry dock. However, there is still a large surplus of unemployed In the city as a result of many being drawn here by the announcement that there was plenty of work available due to th shipping of grain. During the entire year. 1524 new pa-plications' were received at the local office for employment as well as 5.257 re-applicatlons. That the empldyers In the district make use of the facilities provided here Is evidenced by the 1157 orders which have been received by the local offlce to supply their wants, which cover a very large variety of requeatf for various kinds of both skilled and unskilled labor. In some Instances, re quests come In for a certain class of labor which was hot available on the local market. Such a request Is then turned over to some other agency to fill If possible. The camps along the Una between here and Prince Oeorge and other employers In that district took a large number of men at various times and 56 transportation certificates, were issued to mfn to fill these needs. The harvest excursion took only about half the number of men from this district this past year as compared with the previous year, a total of 317 men and 12 women taking advantage of facilities provided by the cheap rates to assist In gathering the prairie harvest. tVEATIIKII KKPOIIT Prince Rupert.
