Your editorial In your Issue of March 21 headed "Anxiety of Dr. Tolmit" In the interests or the fishing Industry should not be allowed to go' unchal lenged for you are evidently ignorant of many of the facta of which Dr. Tolmle is Informed on fishing conditions on the B.C. coast. As Japanese fishermen are being gradually displaced from the salmon fisheries.' they are. naturally anxious to find mplwjmtnt for themselves and their boats, many of them are suitable Icr halibut fishing. I have it on the best of authority that one of the largest '.fishing companies on this coast has already engaged thirty' Japanese boats, carrying two andHhree men to the boat, and Is negotiating for another thirty similar boats to engage in the halibut fishing Industry. These Japanese fishermen are guaranteed by the Company against loss and are to be paid eight cents pr pound for their flah. This, I think, constitutes a very grave menace to the white fishermen engaged In halibut fishing and halibut flihermen generally, appreciate In no mall degree, the effort of Hon. Dr Tolmle at Ottawa to nip this matter In the bud. Should the Company above referred to succeed In employing sixty Japanese boats. It would mean the employment of one hundred and twenty to one hundred and eighty Japanese fishermen, where white fishermen rhould be employed and, through the nature of the contract, would have a tendenc) to demoralize the market for bcth Canadian and American white flahermen. , I It not time that the press of Canada, and particularly of British Columbia coast cities, largely dependent on the fishing industry, should get behind our public men and support them In any move which la likely to prevent the demoralization of obe of our great natural resources, regardless of whit perty any wctton of the press may ASTHMA I C'i'LONIC ""ONCHITIS.
